Walther, that was because West Germany was occupied territory until 1955 and the Americans and Brits had large dumps there. Now whether or not it jumpstarted the German economy was hard to say, it certainly employed German civvy staff- but the vast majority of military equipment was not made there

David powell- sorry that sounds a bit formal, sounds a bit like Constantine the Great- runs out of soldiers and creates the church, it was cheaper and much more efficient- so it may be a precedent.
