We'd be better off pre-positioning about a BGs worth of stores and equipment on a boat in the harbour (or a land based store if space allows) and have a contingency to fly in a Light Role Inf Bn with the neccesary Engrs, Arty and RAC support. A few Marines in boats may be a good idea too.

A flight or two of helis held in some sort of storage facility and flown every now and then too.

How long to fill up a couple of aircraft, fly down and drive/walk out of the hanger/boat? 48 hours?

Boats, subs and typhoons/tornados can fly in as neccesary.

But still, what is the obsession with putting rock apes down there?

    Never blow someone else's trumpet.

It puts them a long way away from Britain?

Brigadier Bill Aldridge, commander of British forces in the South Atlantic, responded by saying: ‘I am not expecting to hand the islands over to anybody and therefore put us in a position to have to retake the islands.’

Sorry but this is all to late.
News just coming in from AFP is that HMS Vanguard has launched a pre-emptive nuclear strike on Beaunes Aires.

No! My plan calls for total superiority over their wine and excellent beef within two weeks. Couldn't we have waited?

Taking this thread on a slightly serious tack something occurred to me yesterday. With Bermuda, UK, Ascension and the FI we could uniquely sow up North and South Atlantic ASW (...if we had Nimrod MR4). No other counties could muster the land bases bar the entire USN deploying.

And another tack, I see hints of a new RAF airfield: RAF St Helena. Taking the wiki article with a large pinch of salt the decision to go ahead with the new airport on St Helena "According to analysts the UK government's decision to finally go ahead with the airport, after long delays, seems to be driven in part by concerns over a continuing tense standoff with Argentina in the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands." Uncited, of course! This makes little sense unless we're worries the Americans would cut-off Wideawake when we need it.

The British government is spending GBP 200 million to build this airport.

There's lots of poncing around perimeters whilst pretending to be SF to be done? A big NAAFI?
