Out of interest PB, can one tour around ML nowadays without having to jump through hoops to get the appropriate permission? I am moving back to Europe after many years in Africa, and a nostalgia trip to the 'shot is definitely on the agenda.

As I suspected! It was (ahem) harder in my day. :D
We did conduct various tests between a broom shaft and the mine marking pole. Due to its lightweight construction and airflow resistance not to mention its flexibility and day glow colour The mine marking pole was the weapon of choice in my era, and besides the cleaners kept complaining to the QM why all their brushes were ending up in two pieces.
