I think that you'll find that the local squaddies were stationed at Pippin Fort.

Ahh Pippin Fort. Typical. Not fit to live inside Trumpton in case they drink the place dry, fight with the locals and knock up all the fair maidens. Art imitating life?

You are all very, very sad people - it reminds me of the story I heard of the training team at Lympstone knocking off the recruits early so they could watch The Magic Roundabout in the Sergeants Mess.

As an aside, on the LSL en route back to Ascension Island after Op Corporate, the navy chaps came up with several ideas to keep the 500+ bootnecks and squaddies entertained.

One idea was a series of quizzes, whereby the questions were given over the tannoy and each mes competed for a prize.

IIRC the ONLY question which was correctly answered by every mess was "Name the members of the Trumpton Fire Brigade".

The fact that everyone knew the answer says a lot about the popularity of kids programmes with squaddies during those quiet moments when not stagging on in NI during the 70's...

No different from listening to Tales From Big Wood on BFBS in the 70's.

Thinking about Big Wood on BFBS, didn't Uncle Bill eventually go off air when he was found to be a bit closer to the children than was considered healthy?

Did they ever attend a fire- or just retrieved the mayor hat from trees?
