Re: Most evocative sounds
The sound of decking being slammed into place in quick time and knowing that you are moments away from completing yet another back crippling MGB build.
The very sound of it can make me reach for the brufen :D
Years ago it was suggested that an apple a day kept the doctor away. But since all the doctors are now Muslim, I've found that a bacon sandwich works best.
I hate all this terrorist business. I used to love the days when you could look at an unattended bag on a train or bus and think to yourself; I’m having that.

Re: Most evocative sounds
The sound of a woman pleading, "Please don't hurt me, I'll do anything you want."
That takes me back.We need people who look to the stars, holding the nation and the world in their hearts but at the same time we need down-to-earth people who can do serious and trying work.
In a definite sense, a country's power and prestige isn't only a reflection of its economic power but also a reflection of its people's quality and morality. Moreover, I think the latter is actually more important in the long-term.

The Last Post - Menin Gate. It's almost impossible to keep composure when it kicks off.
A Spitfire.
A pint being pulled.
Also evocative is the sound of an AK clacking away at close quarters - evocative of underwear-filling dread.

Re: Most evocative sounds
Sounds?
My kids snoring quietly in the summer heat in France.
The Scarey One moaning as she gets her just desserts as I rug-munch. :D
Spuddy going "Fancy a brew?"
"End-Ex" on the radio.
Iain having yet another ND.
"Fire for effect".
The Last Post... still makes me shiver.
A sploosh as those biscuitsbrown hit the pan in ablutions.
Bagpipes.
"Fancy a Pint?"
My Dad.
My Dad telling me to fix us a drink before dinner. Doubles all round!
The "CRACK" as the canopy opens and you don't need to s**t yourself anymore.
Rounds overhead.
Getting into my bag and hearing everyone else's zipper going "Zuuuupppp" and knowing that 3 LSWs and other staggers are doing their stuff.
The "crack" as a bottle of Malt is opened.
etc.!If in doubt, brew up!

Re: Most evocative sounds
Leaving Spa in my VW Beetle and thinking 'engine sounds good today'. Looked in mirror and right behind me was Vanwall with gawd knows how many cylinders blipping throttle en-route from F1 race to garages.
Sounds heard at a military funeral. Flowers of the forest in a Jock regiment by a lone piper. Hounds in full song and singing in kennels

The whine of the Alvis engine on the Stalwart and the change in pitch when undergoing flotation training acress the Weser at Hameln.
A war hasn't been fought this badly since Olaf the Hairy, High Chief of all the Vikings, accidentally ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside.

Agostini on a Moto Guzzi V8 coming down from Kates Cottage.
The sound of a Land Rover diff breaking up going at full tilt in low box
The gentle clickerty sound of a shotgun being closed behind you in the woods at night.
Napier Deltic pulling hard
Triple Packard petrols being wound up to full throttle (only heard it the once, never forgotten)

Agreed, the ex and I went to Belgium in 1998, did a Flanders Fields tour run by a small husband and wife company called Quasimodo IIRC. Bloody good tour and we were at the Menin Gate at 1700 that day. Cue big lump in throat - still have the photos somewhere, maybe stick them in the gallery

Lavilla's and Haslam's Ducatis thumping past me at Thruxton BSB a few years back. Soo much better than straight 4's.

Re: Most evocative sounds
Merlin , from the first cough and sigh to shutdown. Just beautiful. Even better 4 Merlins doing the same , Just Jane or the BBMF Lanc.
He had bought a large map representing the sea,
Without the least vestige of land:
And the crew were much pleased when they found it to be
A map they could all understand.

Military : pitch black.. doss bag getting zipped up 'ZZZzzzziipp' then curling up into a ball with a daft grin on my face!!
as someone has said.. Lynx helicopter screaming towards you 'two minutes to pick up' nice one..
and 'endex' is a good one
Civvie: Mark 2 Escort BDA engine on full throttle...
Stupid: coughing just as a ring pull on another 'tinnie' is opened..
started in Canada and went on for years in our coy..
I defy anyone not to look up at a spitfire with the merlin engine

Being woken up at silly o'clock in morning to stag on, and hearing the patter patter of rain drops on your bivvy bag.....
