'Find a French girlfriend. Bon courage'

I've been married to one for 28 years and still can't speak the pestilential language - agree about the Bon Courage bit, though.

Thanks, but I'm sticking with being in the British army I was only passing on the info given to me by members of the the FFL. Theres two reasons I wouldn't join the legion one, its sounds a very hard life and two, I would have to speak French.

I bought the house I have lived in for the past 27 years precisely because it was 150 yards from the local Royal British Legion Club. What a selling point. :D

It can't be that difficult, my children speak it all the time ..... living in France does help

Bloke I was at school with joined the FFL and I found it easier to understand his French than his strong Perth accent! Kelvin, if you're reading this, hope you're doing ok!

French is easy enough to read unfortunately the bloody French don't speak it properly. They have sloppy pronunciation and their rapid 20 words per second delivery makes it sound like gibberish.

i have found that consuming copious amounts of alcohol turned me from a nervous, tentative french speaker to a polyglot, able to converse with a bar full of french-canadians all night without any hesitation or shame.

alcohol - gets my vote every time. the biggest obstacle to learning a language is nerves / being ashamed to try. get wankered and you'll do great!
