    Then I apologise, it must be my memory, but I could have sworn I was there?

    Sorry Jimbo, my mistake.
    How very gracious of you...are you a member of the nobility yourself? If not I'm sure for a reasonable sum I could ordain you an Archimandrite of the Universal Life Church, by the powers vested in me by the State of California?

    This by PM ...
    Just a thought... but if we are interested in diseminating info about Shortt to a wider public I was wondering if anyone had contacted this chap?

    Robert Fox

    I have to confess he is not within my own circles of professional contacts ... indeed I know very little about him other than the name... but he may be interested if there is a juicy story on offer. I could try contacting him if you wish (I know a few people who know people).
    Do we/should we stir in ever-increasing circles?

    In my private life, I am in contact with the defence correspondents of a number of organs on a daily/weekly basis. I am loath to use my super-powers for evil but if a good "dossier" could be prepared then perhaps I might be persuaded...mwahaha!

    Also from a PM:

    http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=i...tt%22#PPA41,M1

    Pages 41-43

    I note that his reference to NATO is once again an open ended comment. He says, "It was hard to believe I was in the Soviet Union, the first person from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) block to enter the Ryazan Higher Airborne Academy."

    Maybe it's just me, but I'm kind of stuck on the term cadet in the article. You know the part where Shortt alludes to something by giving you the bare minimum of information and leaves you to fill in the blanks?

    Started thinking about cadets, we have two species here, Officer Cadets that attend RMC and are enrolled members of the CF and Cadets that belong to the youth group that is sponsored by DND. Our youth air cadets can be seen running all over the airbase here during the summer, in fact they have their own accommodations/huts inside the base. Our sea cadets can be seen running all over HMCS Ontario for the summer (located at RMC) ... getting the picture? So I wonder if there are two sides to this little article - cadets and cadets.

    However, this version of his visit to Russia is much more restrained and tame than his report to the editor of Pegasus later that year. How many jugs of booze did you drink then Shortt me old dear?

    From The Times - 14/07/1998 (356 words)
    By Michael Evans.

    BEFORE his sudden death in 1992, Peter Martin was convinced he was being followed, according to his fiancee (Michael Evans writes).

    Rosemary Durrant was so concerned when the counter-terrorism expert died that she arranged for skin tissue to be removed after his post-mortem examination in Oxford. The tissue is expected to be re-examined in the new investigation.

    Mrs Durrant told The Times yesterday: "Peter said he had been approached about biological warfare and that he had been to Porton Down to receive special training. He also told me he had informed the authorities about the South African approach. He was very worried about biological substances getting into the wrong hands."

    Mrs Durrant said her former fiance had cause to be afraid for various different reasons, not just from his knowledge of the South African biological warfare programme. Several weeks before he died at his home in Kirtlington, Oxfordshire, he began to suffer terrible pain, Mrs Durrant said. "There was no explanation. He was physically fit. He went for a brain scan two weeks before he died but nothing was found."

    Her concerns are supported by Jim Shortt, a former associate of Mr Martin who worked as a project director at Special Training Services and is now director-general of the International Bodyguards Association. He said that he and Mr Martin had been approached by Brigadier Wouter Basson during an exhibition on military medicine at an hotel in Central London.

    Mr Shortt said: "He was accompanied by the South African military attache and I gave him brochures. His story was that he needed information about defence against biological warfare because South African troops operating in Angola and Mozambique faced possible chemical and germ attacks by Russian and Cuban elements."

    He added: "We were very suspicious. It was arranged for Peter and I to have a one-day course at Porton Down's nuclear, biological and chemical defence school, near Warminster, so that we could cross-check with the experts what Basson had been asking."

    TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION

    AMNESTY COMMITTEE

    APPLICATION IN TERMS OF SECTION 18 OF THE PROMOTION OF NATIONAL UNITY AND RECONCILIATION ACT, NO.34 OF 1995.

    JAN JONATHAN LOURENS APPLICANT

    (AM6490/97)

    DECISION

    The Applicant in this matter was an engineer who joined the Air Force in 1982/3. He subsequently transferred to Special Forces as a Captain when he came under the command of Brigadier Wouter Basson. He now applies for amnesty for supplying various types of weapons and accessories namely:

    1. Letter bomb mechanisms;

    2. Silencers for weapons;

    3. Various types of specifically made weapons which could be used in the application of small amounts of lethal chemicals to individuals. These weapons varied from injector based through to small projectile launching weapons.

    These weapons were supplied to his Commanding Officer and at no time was the Applicant aware of when, how or against whom the weapons were to be used. In some instances he prepared the weapon himself; in others he obtained them from a Mr Phil Morgan. The period referred to in his application was 1985 to 1992.

    The Applicant's political objective in acting as he did was to contribute towards the defeat of the Liberation Movements' armed struggle against this country. It was his belief and intention that the weapons be used against those who were planning and implementing armed insurrection against South Africa.

    Philip Morgan, who is referred to above, has also applied for amnesty in respect of the supply of weapons confirmed in his application that he reported to the Applicant but understood Brigadier Wouter basson was in overall control.

    We are satisfied that the application meets the requirements of the act: that the Applicant acted with an acceptable political objective and that he has made a full disclosure of his part in the obtaining of weapons.

    Accordingly the Applicant is GRANTED amnesty in respect of his obtaining for and supplying lethal weapons or apparatus to Brigadier Wouter Basson during the period 1985 - 1992, such weapons being;

    1. Letter bomb mechanisms;

    2. Silencers for weapons;

    3. Various specially made weapons which could be used in the application of small amounts of lethal chemicals to individuals varying from injector based weapons to small projectile launching weapons.

    Ahh, boffin walting. Just why? I've shut up over the last few months as I don't really have anything to contribute. But as a fledgling boffin I can maybe help here.

    I've done some digging to try and locate the Proceedings for this Conference.

    It would include the abstracts of all the scientific papers presented, and probably the details of the chairs of sessions, thus providing info on whether Shortt actually managed to present himself as an academic toxicologist of such stature as to chair a session or not.

    Unfortunately, the only physical copy of the Proceedings I have been able to locate is in the HQ of the World Health Organization in Geneva. Unless we have a keen Swiss ARRSER it seems a dead end as they don't allow inter-library loans.

    Unfortunately, Bruno Heyndrickx seems to have disappeared off the biomedical literature radar in 1991, and I can't find any affiliation or (unsurprisingly) an email address to try and contact him. I'd hesitate to call this another self-licking lollipop, but, y'know.

    Otherwise, the International Association of Forensic Toxicologists, a reputable organization, may well be interested or informative regarding this issue, as prehistoric as it may be http://www.tiaft.org/

    I'll enquire once I can, and give a buzz to my forensically-inclined mates.

    Re: 'Baron' Castleshort Part III

    After Three Massive Websections on ARRSE exclusively about James Short[t] I am beginning to have difficulty in reconciling his' life' with his 'presumed exploits'..

    Here is a man of some 50 plus years who has lived life large according to numerous websites [ okay.. IBA connected ones ]..

    He found God and sought to serve his fellows by spiritual means , yet kept his mind and body alert through Jap-slapping...though, in true love of fellow man he apparently never used his skills in combat or competition to ' prove ' himself to others [ as there seems to be no record of him ever winning any trophies, awards or other public attestations to his skills other than some folk saying he was competent/good at it.]

    Not content to look after their spirits, he decided to look after their bodies as well and sought to include the ' healing arts' in his life skills and left the contemplation of God to become a nurse, [ though not a doctor - perhaps he lacked the necessary pre-requisite scholastics? or failed to ' doctor' up the appropriate certificates? - though I have no proof of this ]

    Before completing his learning of the nursing arts, he was already imparting the lessons to the military in some way shape or form as he had also decided to save the world by being a specialist in terrorist suppression techniques with an elite force/arm of government..allowing him not only to use his medical skills, but his Grasshopper-snatch-the-pebble-skills as well..

    His abilities and effectivness in this area was such that more than just the SAS/SBS/SEALS/ETCeteras needed him, but other public, private and governmental organizations needed him as well and, in the interest of non-partisanship and world peace, he taught all and sundry no matter what side of the 'great divide' they were on so that both Democracies, Dictatorships, Open and Suppressive Regimes benefited from his knowledge in equal parts thus maintaining the ' balance of power' and bringing , if not world peace, a stalemate in aggression, thus earning himself the highest of Vatican honours.

    Allied with the Immortal OTT, he expanded his insight and expertise into a world wide empire - the IBA - so that his disciples/acolytes took his knowledge around the globe. This generosity of spirit and nobility of heart made him the recipient of awards and ribbons from grateful potentates real and imagined, governments legitimate and exiled, and organizations valid and fictitious..

    I can only say that this man's life is ' legendary' in the true sense of the world. I, for one, would hate to see it reduced to simple reality anytime soon, as I am sure more could be revealed in Part IV...

    we're at page 26 and 30,000 views...there's still time...
    My Lesbian neighbours gave me a Rolex. I think they misunderstood when I said ' I wanna watch '.
