Was on Telic with 3rd battalion, funny feckers and good lads, spend many an evening in the back of their Warriors, sweating my titties off.

Hello I am currently in the joining process and my first job choice is a com systems op for the Royal Sigs.
I picked this job because it's a trade and if I left I would have some transferable skills if/when I left the army.
However I really want to join the infantry and do soldiering at its finest but any time I tell people this they all say something along the lines of "You won't have any skills when you leave!" "But you are too smart! Get a trade!" and I am wondering if there is any weight to these claims?
I've heard on these very forums that you can volunteer for various courses no matter what job you pick and still get some good skills that could be used in civvy street, is this true?
Also why do people always think the infantry are thick cnuts? This can't be true can it?

Here is a list of job/trades open to people who join the Infantry Infantry Jobs - British Army Website
Most of these will come with some sort of NVQ, though much to get excited about they can lead to better qualifications.
Also, you will have ample opportunity to do things like OU courses in your spare time (if you're that way inclined).
It's what you make, you could spend money, time and effort working towards GCSEs, A-Levels, a degree or almost any other course you can think of, or you can go out get hammered every night and piss your money down the drain.
With Learning Credits and Enhanced Learning Credits the Army will also help to pay towards any civvy qualifications you might want to do.

Also, the majority of ex-forces lads, including so-called thick cunts from the infantry, do get jobs. Whether it's HGV driving, security, office work, emergency services, prison screw, customs officer, running a pub, postie, civil servant, and more. The average infantry bod may not be as brainy as a REME intrument tech, a Royal Signals comms tech, or some of the jobs in the RAMC or Royal Engineers, but he is switched on, with loadsa common sense, and a can-do attitude.
Good luck whatever you choose to do.

When I went to the AFCO to start my app, I also said I want to join the infantry. The recruiter told me I may be limiting myself and should look into other jobs too.
