Give it a short period of time and blood will be spilled in various bars/pubs and battlefields through out the lands under the names of the new titled Regts by its members with as much pride as the old ones, new names maybe but same 1st class bods that make any Regt/Bn.
Yeah That would be true if it was first class bods. We all know that the quality of Crows is getting worse by the intake. My instructors will have said it about me ans their instrucctors about them and so on.
Truth is these new regiments aren't a patch on our and the days of old. We cant complain but we arent from wesex, lancaster etc etc because there are people worse off in the army. For example i dont see a 1st Battalion the Figians. Although Some PWRR may disagree!
As a man who carries a rifle into battle, I can’t think of a better title. Since the Rifles will recruit from Newcastle to Newquay and all points in between “Wessex” hardly seems appropriate, and since the RGBWLI, LI and RGJ are all “Royal” regiments already (the LI just choose not to have it in their title) the Rifles will undoubtedly enjoy the privileges (whatever the hell they might be) of being “Royal” whether it is in the title or not. So why complicate things?
The cap badge is planned to be the universal symbol of light infantry (which all the merging Regiments now are): a bugle horn, stringed, in silver. This symbol has been worn by riflemen since rifles were first issued and the concept of the intelligent soldier, capable of independent action, was first developed (to cries of “that’ll never work, if you let the buggers take their neck-stocks off and run round using fire and movement the whole fabric of the universe as we know it will collapse. Harrumph!”).
So: Forward the Rifles!
BTW, your picture is of an other-arms version of the rifle, not one a Rifleman would carry. And the Royal Tank Regiment don’t seem any worse for having their primary weapon prominently mentioned in their title :D :D
Apologies for going on but as a EX DERR and Wessex with a family lineage of 2 generation who served in the Berkshire and Wiltshire county regiments Im naturally going to argue our corner to hang onto something from our former I.D's (this is a local regiment for local people!) but taking into account the recruiting area maybe as suggested the Rifles will be a name all can adjust to. Are there going to be any old regimental names kept on at Platoon level, I hope so.
And yes it was the first one I saw on Google image search!

Not wishing to be picky, put surely anyone holding and using a rifle, as that picture depicts, is going to be a rifleman (as well as their role), if not, what are they?

I also carry a Gerber multitool but that doesn't make me a craftsman.

Discipline: Discipline is the sacrifice of a man's comforts, inclinations, safety, even life for others, for something greater than himself. It is the refusal to be the weak link in the chain that snaps under pressure.
2/3rds of the LI come from County Duham and Yorkshire and even the Jackets mostly recruit from Fijii. The rest come from London, Ox and Bucks (hence the original title) or Shropshire.
Just because the D and D's and the Alphabet regiment has joined in does not make the Rifles even vaguely Wessex based. It just means that now the Light Div can recruit from ALL OVER THE COMMONWEALTH
It's a matter of time before they work their way into East Anglia...
The part I find interesting is that The London Regiment are to move to the Household Div. Does anyone have any more info on this? My brother is Gren Gds and my uncle was a London so I'd be interested to see if they are all going to get the khaki beret, blue/red/blue flash behind the cap badge etc?
PWRR with blue/red/blue backing? It could happen!
