In my Armoured (Op's) / Mounted (Ceremonial) experiance, all the foot Guards are the same, With the except of the Scots Guards, who had the capability to get hammered beyond belief by 1pm on a Friday payday (When Friday is the last working day of the month) in The Star in Windsor!
Worked with all of them on courses / ex's, all as good as each other, all loyal to their own, all willing to work with any other unit that wants to. It doesn't strike you until you go away on your own, on a course how stong the Guards division family can be. If you walk in to a cookhouse on a course, you see a L/Sgt from the Welsh, (You're a Guardsman in the Coldstreamers) you just sit next to him and introduce yourself. Seen and experianced it a few times, but I've not seen it with other regts very much, unless they were the same capbadge (E.g. Corps - RE, RLC, or where there are 2 / 3 Battallions and they are in different battalions of the same capbadge).
I'd only pick one over another IF there was a family history, otherwise I'd just go for which ever one is the local one for you. Probably the Coldstreamers.

From what I've gathered, the Guards units do as much combat trainin, exercises etc as any other infantry unit?

I think it would be fair to say that the Guards primary role is combat, and therefore combat is their primary training.

However, they make a big target with those really tall furry helmets.

    Wise and sound.
"As we moved slowly through the outskirts of the town we passed row after row of little grey slum houses running at right angles to the embankment. At the back of one of the houses a young woman was kneeling on the stones, poking a stick up the leaden waste-pipe which ran from the sink inside and which I suppose was blocked. I had time to see everything about her - her sacking apron, her clumsy clogs, her arms reddened by the cold. She looked up as the train passed, and I was almost near enough to catch her eye." Many thanks for all the responses. I had a few reservations about choosing a Guards regiment, I guessed that the ceremonial side of things would be good for personal development and carry a certain cache, but I wanted to join the army to see a bit of action! I had got the impression that they had a smaller role in training and operational deployments. It appears I was mistaken, So decision made.

    16th September!
