The jock guards are a quality regiment and I think you'll find they do their fair share of "real soldiering". To the original poster don't worry about it, no matter which reg you join youll have banter, you're not going to be the first English lad to join the scots. Have a laugh, do the job well and you'll have pals for life! In training for the jock guards about half of us were English and half jocks. We had a decent laugh! Forget about gettin your head kicked in cos your English the only time you'll get your head kicked in is if your a wee prick! Concentrte on your phys and enjoy training! Good luck pal!

The point I was trying to make is that yes Guards Regiments do train for and deploy on Ops like any other Infantry Bn but if a Guardsman completed his 22 years service up to half of that time could be spent on cerimonial duties.

There's five Guards battalions so surely they'd be spending five or six years on PDs at most? I can think of things I'd rather be doing that stagging on outside a big house but there's things I'd rather do than sitting round cleaning earth spikes or doing the shit jobs on Warriors or counting blankets for the RQ or any other shit job we make our Siggies/Privates/Fusiliers/Troopers etc do too and I assume life on PDs is a bit better when you get to Full Screw and SNCO much like life is for all the other trades/jobs in the Army.

If a SCOTS soldier spent his entire 22 yrs in Edinburgh the chances are he would spent almost as much time on PD as a Guardsman will.

There are very few Public duties in Scotland anymore, other than the royal guard in Balmoral which is a coy task and not just done by the SCOTS you only get the occasional week at edinburgh castle during Royal week and other events during the summer.

okay, aside from making up the spending half of your 22 year career on PDs if a Gman, are you implying that line infantry spend 100% of their career on ops?

That's not true though is it?

I've been in 10 years and have been posted to Central London twice, Windsor and Aldershot twice. I've spent far more time on tour and exercises than I have on public duties.

Who provided the Papal Guard when the Bishop of Rome attended the Susan Boyle concert.

Tattoo is Edinburgh Garrison outsourcing this to Historic Scotland!
