You urgently need to change the security from WEP to WPA2.

I'd still check your IEEE 802.1x settings on the wireless connection authentication tab. It needs to be checked if you are using authentication. Just make sure "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network" is ticked. That patch could have changed it?
Rough explanation - IEEE is the talking to set up some hot wireless love. During that flirting, your PC and Belkin talk about what they're going to do to each other. One of the final things the Belkin asks about is what protection your PC is going to use. Without that box ticked, your PC at that point will just drop the connection.
With the same theme, WEP is the equivalent of a crumpled mars bar wrapper, as others have said, possibly not the best choice. Do try a WPA connection, it could be that the patch just made your wireless card a bit more of a gent.

SolutionBase: Troubleshoot wireless networking after installing Windows XP SP2
Win XP SP2 has been known to cause problems with some wireless connections/devices
If you have that installed then it might be worth have a quick google and see if you can find the same symptoms.-------------------------------------------------------------

ALL CHANGE!! Only still have the same problem...
Right, let's start from the beginning. I now have a brand new pc running Windows 7 (which is a nightmare when you're so used to XP, why do they have to hide everything?), installed the Netgear Adaptor, started it running... initially it couldn't see the router, then it could but STILL wouldn't connect!!
I've tried checking the IEEE but clicking on properties I can't see an authentication tab...
