    Nepalese/Gurkha name?

    Chaps

    Is PADAM BAHADUR (first two names) a Nepalese/Gurkha name?

    Just checking someones cultural origins, as I feel they may have been done a minor injustice, and I may be able to redress the balance.

    (Can't go into details on a public forum, but if anyone is interested I can PM you the details)

    Any info/feedback gratefully rec'd, WOTW

    Padam Bahadur Tamang summited Everest on May 10, 1988 via the standard south east ridge route as part of the China-Japan-Nepal Friendship Expedition.

    The TAMANGS, are people who are alleged to be one of the oldest inhabitants of the hills north of Kathmandu. The areas of Lantang, Ganesh Himal and Helembu and the surrounding area comprising the rim of the valley. The TAMANGS were part of the 1953 Everest expedition lead by Sir Edmund Hillary and were once again placed in the history of Everest, when SAMBHU TAMANG, the 18 years old boy became the YOUNGEST person (at the time) ever to reach the summit of EVEREST in 1973.

    Just asked the ex Gurkha I work with and he says it's legit. He should know I suppose his middle name is Bahadur.

    Sounds Kosher. I know a Devi Bahadur, hik Bahadur, and many variations threof. Seems to me that there are many variations of the names within the community.

    Yes, it was often added to names (including British names) as an honorific in the old Indian Army - especially to winners of gallantry medals.

    padam bahadur is certainly nepalese(Gurkha) name....Bahadur means 'brave'
