Got another one! Church parade! The whole Regiment marching badly to church in Sunday morning in badly fitting suits that looked like a cross between miami vice and your grandads de-mob suit.
Ramsey Troop looked the worst! they're just evil?

    Hey Lads,
I have stuck some scans in the wrong section on forum, have a look in Gunners, there is a bit of stuff that pertains to JLRRA.
You may find it interesting, in an anoraky sort of way.

Hello GQ, i was also Mansergh Tp during those dates and i agree they were way out in front, Gaz the fag as Tp Sgt with his faded denims and Baz Newlove with the short tongue.

Ahh those fond memories of changing parades. The forbiden ice cream van that used to temp you outside your block, and the nurse whos name i cant remember, with the hunch back. Being last man in the dinner que and having to serve custard. Bring it back

Touch it, feelit, watch it grow.
Suck it, squeeze it, watch it blow.

For those who understand, no explanation is needed.

    Re: ex JLRRA?

Does anyone remember a Sgt Dave Trick who was the Troop number 1 of Borgard Troop in 1976. He used to bite people in the swimming pool, didn't half make you swim faster, oh and the civvie teacher bloke who was in charge of the Regimental swimming team, cheers Headgash.

    Ironside Troop 79/80 Intake
Seconded to Milne Troop Gymastic display team
    Con Troop 80

Having read this forum there are so many memories: Where to start.

    The characters;

Sgt Pervez no suprises there, his boots were alway gleaming ,dripping even, he was a model soldier for sure. No surprises that he reached the dizzy heights.

Stand Still, Stand perfectly still! followed by "Your not working" Mark Time ARrrrrrrrr

    That man Drill Sgt Major Harding was the Drill Pig examplar! total;

    What's your name Sonny ?
    Ian Sir !
Ian, Ian you don't have first names in the Army Boy what's your name?
    Mansell Sir!
Get off my parade ground etc.

As to the bullying it was part of the course I could understand it . It was the way to weed out thoses who were not up to standard, and was instigated by the Troop Sgts through Regimental Baths. There was one troop that went too far in my time and a certain J/Bdr was serverely repremanded for having put Bleach in the Bath along with the Vim and Soap powder !

I was in the Regimental Boxing team although I hated boxing, I only did it because it was compulsory at inter battery level, I ended up being good at it elevated to Regimental team trained by the Polish ex SAS sgt major. I remember insisting in not wanting to box and going into the ring in a fight with a local boxing club not raising my gloves and getting a pasting, logic being that "you can bring a horse to water but ........."

I transfered to the Gymnastic's display team and travelled around the U.K and the stint in France.

Let's be honest here. Junior Leaders Regiment Royal Artillery was the British take on the Hitler Youth.

The training was brilliant not many Companies in Civivy street are going to train their workers in Leadership for 12 months, especially at the age of 16!

Some chap made a reference to JLRRA being a dustin for outcasts of dysfuntional families or ex childrens homes. That seems a little unkind. I was not aware of many people being from such, apart from myself the later not the former. But I chose the Army as a progression into adult life not as an escape but for adventure and career. The conjecture is more myth than reality.

As to racism there was some but more from the staff than the recruits.

during a fag break after a drill session:

Troop Sgt: "So who do you think will be promoted then ?"

Troop; "Not sure, definately Chalkey (a nickname kindly ascribed to me by my troop sgts##)"
Troop Sgt: "F**King Chalkey, no N*gger is going to be promoted in my Troop!"
Chalkey: " suit's me Sarn't, I thought it was going to be tough here but it's was tougher in my childrens home. I should have joined the French Foreign Legion (having just read Simon Murry's Legionaire) this is kids play".
    Troop Sgt: Gob Smacked!

I remember the Bistro, hated it. Also in my intake there were so many Jocks great characters on of which not even the Jocks could understand having come from Dundee (no names no pack drill :D ), indeed being in the troop was like the tower of baybal (sp) with all the various accents.

JLRRA certainly straighten me out, but I believe it was a used to capture interest in the Army early rather than any real advantage of having done all that training. We are too primed when we joined our Units and had to be toned down.

Hi Gunner 221 (no doubt starting with 245...............) Glad to see things are going are well for you. One of the decent blokes of that time.
