They already have haven't they? Isn't AFC Harrogate the new version of Junior Leaders, although they provide soldiers who think the army is a sixth form college and they only have to attend when they feel like it. A point made by D the chef that most Regts admin problems with nigs come from soldiers trained at Harrogate. Not blaming the instructors they have to work within guidelines for looking after children. On top of this the headlines from the papers saying that were not spending enough money on trainees and that the system is failing them. Any comebacks

    Wot no juniors !!

Sorry to barge in on your little lovefest but as a former member of the Junior Parachute Company 1983-84, I am curious to find out when they actually phased out the whole 'Junior Army' thing.

I know they moved JPC to Pirbright in 86-87(ish) and assume it went some time after, was it part of the SDR ?

Heard a rumour that the Gunners may be following the lead of Catterick and moving all their Phase 1 training to Larkhill when 19 Regt moves out of Horne Bks in a couple of years (!?!) time...

Being an ex junior bleeder (June 78-Sep 79) in Nicholson Tp 40 Wardrop Bty, I think it was an outstanding place. I have many good memories, but only a few bad! There is now the Army Foundation Colledge with Gnr specific troops. Which is a good recruiting for us and we have some quality from it. You will never re-create the JLRRA in any form, as attitudes have changed in military life as well as civvy street, and I think most of the youth today are not robust enough to be put through the same type of training. Its more soft now!

Gunn Troop June 92. How I miss that @*+%#ng ski slope. Is it still There? I have alot of good memories but that bugger was not one of them. I remember once when we had to lookafter an orange. We had to give it a NAME, RANK, NUMBER. Supply a locker..you know the score. So the day came when the orange, JUNIOR GUNNER PEEL was under my wing of protection. However on this day we had a block inspection and I did not have time to check PEEL for any visible marks. Why should I? JGNR EAST is a good mate of mine................or so I thought. Inspection came. Orange, sorry! PEEL was inspected and was found to have a small bruise. Sent to gym with PEEL. PTI squashed PEEL with ash pole, meanwhile ski slope is keeping my mind & body occupied. When I tried to explain to my Troop SGT what had happened to GNR PEEL, PTI Staff denied all knowledge and so off I go again to improve my sking skills without the ski's. What memories. I STILL REMEMBER EASTIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was a boy soldier at Bramcote from 2/62 to 3/64. I was in Milne Troop, 39(Roberts)Bty and, I have to say, it was the most interesting experience I ever had in my life.
It could never, and must never, be resurected. The politicaly Correct climate that we live in nowadays would never let young boys of 15 to 17, as we where then, be treated with the same degree of cruelty. Having said that, it was the making of a lot of us.
It's biggest single failure though was that it gave us all a false expectation of what we could and would achieve in our Army career, by it's very Reason Detre (To train the future NCOs and Senior NCOs of the Royal Artillery!). I attained the heady rank of L/Bdr in 9 yrs service and I had to go through hoops to get that!!

Wardodger, didn't get your last message. Too new to this game and a bit thick, only being one step up from a rag arsed gunner!!
When I was a lad.........we had EXTRA DRILLS! Oh what fun!!! Sat afternoon, report to the guardroom to be inspected in best uniform. Return to barrackroom to get changed into working kit and report back to guardroom for two hours of fatigues. All under the beady eyes of the permanent provo staff, who hated us for screwing up their weekend and got their own back by handing out EXTRA DRILLS!!!
It was nothing unusual to get awarded 1 EXTRA DRILL and to spend every weekend from then on trying to get rid of the extra EXTRA DRILLS you picked up on your EXTRA DRILL!
