    Interesting game.

I ended up a low-life low sec griefer scumbag ganker or 'Pirate' for short.

Quit when I realised that I was only still playing to elicit strongly worded messages in languages I often couldn't understand - that and the stress of staying one step ahead of all the other gankers got a bit much.

The most interesting part was coming up with ship fits and tactics that gave the gankee no chance of survival or fighting back. Looking back I guess I was my own worst enemy but it seemed like fun at the time.

In my defence I did go through a period of offering free advice to victims if they wanted it - usually those who didn't get all butthurt at me for blowing up their shiny internet spaceship.

I'd definately recommend EVE to those who can follow the simple rule of not flying what they can't afford to lose whilst learning from their mistakes when they inevitably lose what they are flying.

Also, DON'T TRUST ANYONE! EVER! Else I promise you, you and your hard earned isk will be headed in different directions.

I am still in Eve Terms very new to it. Quite enjoying bimbleing about. Got Podded yesterday and it put me back 14 days when it came to skill training (Expensive lesson when you think of the subscription)

But at least now you know to update your clone regularly.

I can give you advice but I'd have no way of knowing if it was useful or not considering how long ago I was playing.

However I'm sure I'm safe in saying that running about on Autopilot is never a good idea if you are in your pride and joy or have a cargohold full of valuables. Even in high sec space you aren't safe from smart bombing gank squads, or at least you weren't. You've probably worked out by now that low sec space is where Pirates hang out and null sec space is jealously guarded by Alliances where if you ain't blue(friendly, and it's not at all likely you will be) you are KOS (killed on sight).

Stick to routes you are familiar with, but if you must go and explore then a good tip is to check the map and set it to show 'ships killed in the last hour' and avoid hot systems. However trade hubs like Jita will probably show as hot but this is usually down to the high volume of traffic where gank squads will happily sacrifice a battleship or two to Concorde if they think the pay off will be worth it.

If you absolutely must go through a hot system or low/null sec (there being no other route) then follow these simple steps:

Dock your main character in a spacestation in the system before the system you're leery of.
    Log out
    Create an alt character
    Log in on alt
Jump into the suspect system and check the entry point for loitering Pirates (gatecamp).
If it is clear, dock alt in spacestation
    Log out
    Log in on main
Jump main into suspect system and dock
    rinse and repeat until destination

It is slow going and not fullproof but you should get fair warning of any gatecamps. Also worth looking to see who is in local (if local chat still exists). Also be suspicious of ships loitering at gates that lead to entry systmes from high sec through to low sec or low sec through to null sec. These may be providing gatecamps with intel of who is jumping through to them. This usually forms part of a tactic to position the gatecampers off grid from the warp gate so that they warp to the gate in time to catch juicy targets (or even any targets) jumping in. Stops them being discovered by those using the tactic outlined in my stepped procedure above and those coming the other way.

Another good tactic if you find yourself being chased is to set a bookmark mid warp, then immediately warp to the bookmark. This is known as safe spotting. Warp to other places in the system at random distances (not 0) making more bookmarks - the more safe spots the better as you can't linger in a safe spot too long as a good pirate will probe your position given enough time. Or he'll give up on you looking for easier prey.

I could go on, but like I said I've no idea if what I've already told you is still useful. There may well be easier or better ways of doing things these days.

Good luck - this is one game where it is a battle of wits as much as anything else.

The sad act inside me and one of my main reasons for looking into eve is its economy, I have been on and off it for about a year when I can find time. Have dabbled with mining, bit of PVE my next venture will be towards a bit of PVP.

The knowledge gained mining, PvEing and/or trading will still come in useful in order to finance your PvPing.

Unless you plan on ransoming victims (I never did as it has its own risks and you miss out on the killmail) then you'll find PvP can become a money sink unless you are good at it and can consistently stay one step ahead of the competition.

This is why it is useful to start up an alt so you have a character which has a good clean security status for high sec trading etc. My alt specialised in research and sold datacores in Jita. But that was a long time ago when datacores were worth a crapton of isk - the bottom soon fell out of that market, but not before I'd made enough isk to set me up for life.

I never really tried null sec alliance PvPing as large fleet ops didn't really ineterst me. I much prefered cruising either alone or as a pair hunting lone mission runners, belt ratters or simple bimblers. I did some low sec Alliance warfare but again I prefered to go off and find targets alone calling in help if I needed it.

I bet Youtube is still the best place to get instructions on how best to go about starting a PvP career - Just ensure the vid seems current.

Let us know how you get on - I for one would be interested in your PvPing endeavors.

I am making a fair bit of ISK on the mining side, I was a few days away from a Hulk but after my podding I am 14 days away.

I was podded by a person belonging to The New order, Bio is below. They are getting quite big its strange but has made it much more fun to go mining now there is a consistent security risk. (I wont be paying or bending my knee to any psychopathic religious zealots. So far failure to abide by their rules has cost me 14 days and about 40 Million Isk but my principles are intact.

    Knight of the New Order
Enforcing the New Halaima Code of Conduct in the name of the Saviour of Highsec, James 315.

The Order is a movement focused on bringing dignity, honor, and higher standards of living to highsec miners.

    Punishable offenses under the Code:
    - failing to possess a New Order Mining Permit
    - Bot or AFK mining New Halaima Code of Conduct
    - foul language in Local
    - disrespecting Order Agents or Knights, or interfering with their Duties
    - failing to put 'gf' in local after being ganked by Order Knights

Offending miners will be bumped & ganked until they comply, or cease mining.

To avoid punishment, a miner is expected to:
    - purchase a 1-year New Order Mining Permit by transfering 10-million ISK to any Order Agent
    - diligently watch local chat
    - turn off all mining lasers (or dock) when going AFK.
