I've heared about 'Das Boot' isn't suposed to be very long and also subtitled?

Anyway, I've thought of another arse American effort - The Battle of the Bulge - ridiculous typical waste of film.

Gentlemen, we are forgetting the classic 'All quiet on the Western Front'. *Has anyone seen the poorer and cheaper British version of 'The Trench'? If nothing else it proves to audiences how dull sitting in a hole in the ground actually is. Sorry those still in the PBI.

I agree with the 'Odd Angry Shot', but as an Australian OC of mine once pointed out; they had more contacts in that film than the Aussie SAS had during the whole of the Vietnam War. Who said only Hollywood exaggerates? *Not like Zulu - fantastically truthful and stirring stuff and*helps all Brits forget the massacre at Isandwana the day before (they even got Bob Hoskins into Zulu Dawn in one of his worst performances ever - probably why they wanted to forget it!)

Stalingrad? What the hell was going on there?

I'm gonna place my vote with A Bridge Too Far, Zulu and Saving Private Ryan, although there are plenty of other exelent ones.

Blackhawk Down was a good one if only for the fact that it's the only 'Hollywood' film I've seen that stuck to the story in the book (Ruined by the section gunners being blatantly armed with blanks on the close-ups - but you can't have everything!) *:-/

At last some sense from Dog Monkey and The Enforcer! *"Cross of Iron" is simply the finest of all war films with something for everyone: violence, guns, aeroplanes, arty, one-liners (I'll show you where the Iron Crosses grow!) and just when you think the director's starting to loose the plot with the flash backs and funny Bosch music, you get a flash of a fine pair of baps *:o as Steiner enjoys his nurse's "bedside manner"! *Fanatastic! *

Yes 'Cross of Iron' is a good film considering it is quite a low budget film of it's time (1976). I recently found it on sale on DVD from Amazon.com.... well worth a buy. *

Too much emphasis here on Hollywood movies and Vietwhatsit movies.

Best war film of THAT genre? - Army Medicine in Vietnam - Old USA medics training flick, shown to the troops in an attempt to prepare them for combat - Ho Ho Ho! what hope!.

Best fiction? (Just) Sean Connery in the old B&W movie, "The Hill" Great, gritty British movie from the '50s. Reminds me of a number of periods under lock and key during my service.

Closest to real life? Probably Dad's Army, just the right amount of humour, idiots and wannabees to be almost reflective!

    Superslime!
At last someone else who has seen An Ungentlemanly Act, possibly one of the best firefights on celuloid I'm sure you'll agree.
Unfortunately I lent my copy out on JCSC and never got it back. *Now I'm lacking in the film department.

INcidentally, We Were Soldiers surprised me having read the general slagging it has had in the press. *That said, most of the reviews are clearly from those who haven't read Hal Moore's book, which the film generally sticks to. *Well worth a watch. *But not one to take your Frau to if you are just about to deploy!!

    You have been warned.
How do you wage war on an abstract noun? It's rather like bombing murder.
