    Chinese film called "The Assembly"
Described as Chinese Saving Private Ryan - fab war scenes, forget the plot (you can see where its going right from the start).

(Maybe civil war/genocide flicks out of Efrica don't qualify as 'war movies' )
I've only seen it once and haven't yet stumped up the courage to do it again. Based on real events in Rwanda, I recall it as an extremely poignant film, and particularly well-acted, especially by the superb John Hurt. Check it out.

Another I've only seen once, years ago on TV, but would like to see again is 'Shot through the Heart' by director David Attwood in 1998 - again, based on real events as 2 snipers who were previously friends end up on opposite sides of the divide in the Balkans.

I've tried to order this DVD through various channels, but it appears to be only produced for Region 1. If anyone's got a fair copy suitable for UK consumption, please let me know (PM me).
I've got it on VHS, dodgy recorded from telly quality but should be watchable. I can probably copy to DVD using my clever combo dvd/vhs player (two holes sir!).

    anyone else want a copy?

Best war movie? Hmm, best movie with uniformed types shooting each other has to be the Japanese film,
    "Battle Royale 2"

There is a scene in that which makes the opening scene of "Saving Private Ryan" look like they weren't even
trying. Mainly because the folks storming ashore under heavy automatic fire are portrayed as school kids. . .

    Re: Best war movies

Anyone remember the Army Training Film "Fighting Patrol"?

Must have been made in the early '60s; it was in B&W, but the chaps were armed with SLRs. There was no real plot to speak of; no famed thesps; not even any pyrotechnic special effects; but I remember it being REALLY pacy and compelling.

Would like to see it again, just to see:
    (1) Why I thought it was so good; and
    (2) Whether the director was, for eg, a young and inexperienced Steven Spielberg

    Any links...?

My bold -- Good movie. I have it in my collection. Unique for it's time as it deals with the early 'training teams' in Vietnam. A generation to come would see that experience become - 'Full Metal Jacket' & 'Platoon'

Zulu has to be the best British war movie made during the colour era. Prior to that, I would have to go for
"Ice Cold in Alex" made in glorious black and white. Top cast as well.

I would think the Cruel Sea for the B&W category.
