"It Happened Here" - an alternative history look at England being occupied by the Nazis. The bit that sticks in my mind is a scene where a bunch of British SS (Iron Duke Div or similar) surrenders. One of their captors goes tonto and slots the lot with a MG42. Very well done, and quite disturbing. Most of the plot follows a nurse who drifts into the Nazi party, gets sent to a hospital where they euthenise "undesirables", tries to leg it, gets caught and then captured by the resistance. Well worth watching.

I can't believe no-one has mentioned the Clint Eastwood film, Heartbreak Ridge. Yank Military cheese at it's best...
Wellington: There's only one way to win a campaign: shout, shout and shout again.
Blackadder: You don't think then that inspired leadership and tactical ability have anything to do with it?
Duke of Wellington: NO! It's all down to shouting. BAAAH!

Ditto on 'It Happened Here', I saw it ages ago, in spite of the country being overun by nazis it does include the British resistance playing far from fair and maintains a reasonable balance. Gets a bit boring at times though.
'Commando Raids are much more fun than girls anyway! You wait and see: You'll slit some bugger's throat open, blow up a bridge or two, pump hot lead into a squad of screaming Jeries - and before you know it, you'll be as right as rain again..'

Zulu is brilliant.
Kelly's Heros hilarious.
Tunes of Glory accurate
But for getting it right try 'They were not divided'. A low budget 1950's b&w film about three types who join the Guards in 1940. No shit, no heroics just a storyline that oozes believability and reality. A very British film.
And the best books on the Army - Quartered Safe Out Here by George McDonald Fraser (if you're a tom) and McAuslan in the Rough and The General Danced Till Dawn (if one is commissioned).happiness is a hot tube

I'm trying to remember the name of this film I saw a while go, think it was black and white, I think it was set in Africa, and the Africans had bofors set on this house where the soldiers were, in and they began to sing and play the piano so that some of them could sneak out and around, and end up sneaking into a firing range, thats the only part i can really remember much of, anyone know of said film?

I would say they are essential reading for any young officer today - the scenes in the mess are spot-on, and the portrayal of regimental characters is deadly accurate.
