I thoroughly enjoyed it. There is a lot more in the book especially building the backgrounds of the characters. There was a lot from the book which was cut out, most noticeable being the section set in 1978, and the storyline was changed considerably in places from the book. But allowing for only two episodes and budgetary restraints, it was a lot better than the crop of reality/quiz shows which fill the tv schedules these days.

The Book portrays Stephne as a bit of a all round good egg, but in teh first episode i thought him a bit of a git,
The book is however one of a Trilogy apparently

Well said acually. I'd rather watch that than Jeremy Vile.

Thanks for the explanations of Birdsong above guys...I thought it was something like that.Regarding him being a TWAT Hayley Atwell - IMDb ...I would say lucky TWAT as he played the geeky mason apprentice in Pillars of the earth and bedded Hayley Atwell.

If Carlsberg made Fantasy league managers I would probably be the BEST MANAGER in the world.

She was also in a film called "Fear of Fanny"; what's that all about, then?

I enjoyed it despite the obvious failings in detail. Like most bbc stuff I find it helps to disengage my brain before watching. One thing it did achieve was to give the wife an appreciation of what those brave men went through when they went over the top that first day of the Somme, especially when I told here of the numbers involved. Poor bitch had a tear in her eye.

By the way, can anyone who's read the book tell me if the moody git nailed the sister or not? Can't be bothered to read it myself.

So, if it had been shown on ITV you wouldn't need to disengage brain?
