Past winners of this award are Unforgiven, Schindler's List, American Beauty, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, and Crash (all beating films like A Few Good Men, The Fugitive, and the Green Mile)... In what way, shape, or form is the Hurt Locker on a par with any of these?
It's probably a damn sight better that the films it's competing against though.
Not a great choice in films up for the Oscars this year. It was between a woman directing an off-the-cuff war film and a big name director and his 3D geeky sci-fi money-spinner. The geeks lost out. The Academy voters tend to look down their noses at such films preferring to pick something so outstandingly artistic or a storyline that is unusual. That's why we Brits do well at the Oscars we usually provide just the right film....not this year though.

Or from another viewpoint - no woman director has won this catagory till Ms Bigelow, who just happens to be competing against her former husband Mr Cameron for the same prize. Good old Hollywood....... again :D

"I firmly believe that we should not march into Baghdad. To occupy Iraq would instantly shatter our coalition, turning the whole Arab world against us and make a broken tyrant into a latter-day Arab hero. Assigning young soldiers to a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator and condemning them to fight in what would be an unwinnable urban guerrilla war." George Bush Snr, A World Transformed, 1998

Isn't it also International Womens Day/Year aswell?
Watched it again last night. Still very mediocre narcissistic shite. Compares unfavorably with both Jarhead and Three Kings neither of which were worth six dollars and a couple of hours spent in the dark.
Whilst not the best movie ever*, at least its winning umpty zillion Oscars prevented that hippy, treehugging POS Avatar from doing so. And milfy whatserface did have some nice things to say about the courage of US servicemen in Eyeraq in her acceptance speech, so all in all good luck to her.
* Best movie ever**: Zombieland. "Cardio, cardio, cardio".
** Well, best I've seen in the last couple of months, anyway.
Some magazine (Times I think) emailed me a couple of weeks ago and asked me to do a write up on it along the lines of, its all bollocks and real EOD pers dont do this, or that etc. But I told them that just cos it says EOD on the avatar doesnt mean I are one. I expect I'll get a request to do one about pilgrims next.

I was part of a briefing group for a w/e film shoot. It has a 'car bomb' scenario. I was grinning like a mad thing as the production team were describing the scene to the director -
"The Army man will drive his little tank thinggie towards the car......." There followed a Q&A session amongst the team on the capabilities of the 'Army Man' and how near/far he needs to be in shot etc. I'm looking forward to linking up with him this Sunday. Wonder if he's on ARRSE?
