Re: Re-make of The Prisoner
Ditto.
The original worked so well WHEN it came out because it was ground breaking AT THE TIME. If the cheap fast buck men what contimum or me too, then they need the brains to correctly evaluate WHY the original did so well and the guts to admit they are feckless mongs by comparrison.
Just something else trashed by Septification
Take 'em out and shoot 'em - that'll make a good programme
No.9
ps. what's the betting ITV bought it because it was cheap ;)

Re: Re-make of The Prisoner
It was easy to identify with Patrick McGoohan after watching him play John Drake for so long in 'Danger Man' ('Secret Agent' in the States). In the original 'Prisoner', he remained the same indomitable and empathetic character despite his circumstances taking a turn for the sinister and surreal. With no such back story for the hero of the new series, one cannot help make unfavourable comparisons. For all we know, he could have been one of the bad guys.
In 1953 the UK Defence Budget was 11.3% of GDP. By 1966 it had been reduced to 6.6%. In 2012 it is hovering around 2%. Good job we're no longer expected to fight any wars, isn't it?

Re: Re-make of The Prisoner
Ok I've given it a fair chance - 2 weeks. Now take this rubbish off please ITV. Everything is so wrong - the lead 'character' doesn't have any, the flashbacks don't work, the village is uninspiring and the walks in the desert are a tad monotonous. This is an insult to the original, they would be better off putting that on instead.
Spend your money on airing more dramas like Foyle's War and Agatha Christie. There is a God and he looked down on the Earth and said "Let there be Liberal Democrats in the Government" and it came to pass that the disciple Dave brought Nick back from the wilderness and there was much partying.

Re: Re-make of The Prisoner
I preferred the original series, and I like the point that it followed on from Danger Man. That said, this remake is not bad, it has its own look about it, and I hope it comes up with some new story lines that McGoohan never got the chance to try. Unfortunately they blew something up in episode 2, which seems a bit like cheating to get your attention. To an oldie like me the Prisoner should consist of clever mind games and the very occasional fist fight.

Re: Re-make of The Prisoner
The original starts on ITV 4 from Ep 1 at 17:55 tonight
We should remember the tremendous contribution of the Queen Mother to the war effort:
As the BBC pointed out, she 'bravely remained in London beside her husband' during the war.
This contrasts sharply with the actions of my grandfather who, on the declaration of war immediately left his wife and children and pissed off, first to France, then North Africa, Italy, France (again) and finally Germany.
The shame will always be with us.

Re: Re-make of The Prisoner
I don't really think I should watch the remake, owing to being a firm fan of the original. Some things should be left well alone. McGoohan never compromised on the Prisoner, either to the demands for follow up and alternative episodes (when people just didn't 'get it') and did everything on his own terms. He earned a reputation as being difficult to work with, but in truth he just didn't want to kowtow to sudios' demands to compromise artistic license to earn more money by making his 1 series wonder into a long running franchise. He should have been James Bond by all accounts, but was too argumentative and opinionated for Mr. Broccoli apparently.

Re: Re-make of The Prisoner
I said that after the first episode, I wasn't going to watch the second, and I didn't, but from what I've read here, I didn't miss a thing, but I did gain an hour of life.
Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.
I didn't say it was your fucking fault, I said I was blaming you.

Re: Re-make of The Prisoner
Morbid curiosity made me watch the first episode of this remake, and i wasn't disappointed by the content! It truly lived down to my expectations and made me feel that my pre judgment on this pile of drivel was correct...It's nice to be right about something so wrong!! No fun at all, just dross
Be seeing you! Unlike the rest of the series
Come Mrs Gargery, let us have a taste of that savoury pork pie and see if we may do it some justice!!!

I am currently watching episode 1 of the original
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, camel blue in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOW!!! WHAT A RIDE !!!!!!!!!!!
