    Dear god.

I dread to think what a watered down mess a Hollywood remake of Oldboy will look like. Spike Lee hasnt made a decent film since Malcolm X.

Scorcese's remake of Infernal Affairs (The Departed) was a fair effort but usually Hollywood remakes are bloody awful. Tony Scott's remake of The Taking of Pelham 123 being just one of them.

Twilight Samurai and When the Last Sword is Drawn are good Samurai films.

Azumi, Zatoichi and Ichi (same story as Zatoichi but with a female protagonist) are good feudal Japan films although not strictly Samurai films.

Both Twilight Samurai and When The Last Sword Is Drawn are excellent films in any genre. Twilight Samurai is probably my all time favourite film. The samurai genre, like any, runs from the crass to the sublime but there are many excellent films notwithstanding. Most of the Akira Kurosawa films are brilliant, especially Ran, which is based on Shakespeare's King Lear. There are scenes in that film that still make my blood run cold.

Yep, I've watched Ran more times than I can count and if I've got the house to myself at the weekend Seven Samurai is the first choice to go in the DVD. The duel scene with the bamboo sticks and then for real is just perfect and rain soaked, mud splattered finale still stands up as an excellent action scene almost fifty years on.

These kept Hollywood cowboy movies inspired as the McQueen / Bryner Magnificent 7 and subsequently Eastwood's 'Man with no Name' series were to honour. Not that I need to remind you, of all posters, on that score.

A fine and deeply subversive Western.
Ransom Stoddard: You're not going to use the story, Mr. Scott?
Maxwell Scott: No, sir. This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.
Incidentally, speaking of legend becoming fact, PBS has a interesting documentary on that famous brothel bouncer, pimp and occasional lawman Wyatt Earp.

I'd never thought of the Gunfight At The OK Corral as a reconstruction era tale of dodgy cattle rustling Democrats V carpetbagging Republicans goons like Earp.
That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on!
