"As we moved slowly through the outskirts of the town we passed row after row of little grey slum houses running at right angles to the embankment. At the back of one of the houses a young woman was kneeling on the stones, poking a stick up the leaden waste-pipe which ran from the sink inside and which I suppose was blocked. I had time to see everything about her - her sacking apron, her clumsy clogs, her arms reddened by the cold. She looked up as the train passed, and I was almost near enough to catch her eye."

I see someone got mugged in the more primitive and rootsie valleys of world music. Awseome, welcome to my world, and in response a gentleman who is a firm favorite of mine Dhafer Youssef, a Tunisian born Oud player who discovered the illicit joys of Jazz Music at Koranic school, his mixture of Jazz and Islamic forms highlights the inherent flexibilty of both styles, he has also worked alongside the brilliant Bugge Wesseltoft

A little bit of poitics and jump up joy from Femi Kuti, son of the late, legendary Fela (the Godfather of Afrobeat), who is in the UK on tour later this month.

This fantastically smelly and soothing, wafting-with-the-fairies piece is called Portofino 2 by Raymond Scott, the true pioneer of synth. I just had to look it up after hearing it in this interesting documentary.

From Lost in Translation, the movie that finally proved Bill Murray could actually act.

We need people who look to the stars, holding the nation and the world in their hearts but at the same time we need down-to-earth people who can do serious and trying work.

In a definite sense, a country's power and prestige isn't only a reflection of its economic power but also a reflection of its people's quality and morality. Moreover, I think the latter is actually more important in the long-term.
