Hello folks,

Having just finished my studies for this academic year I am now at a bit of a loose end until October. I am trying to get away for a few weeks/ months through training with the TA preferably on an overseas exercise like BATUK, but I have no idea how to go about applying for something like this as my unit is quite unhelpful in this respect.

As I am only a Sapper I'm not expecting anything too gucci, but does anyone know how to go about getting training opportunities like this and can OTXs be viewed on DII?

Many thanks,

There is currently a belief that the shortfall in TA numbers will be made up, and any exodus of employed STABs due to the introduction of mandatory...

There is currently a belief that the shortfall in TA numbers will be made up, and any exodus of employed STABs due to the introduction of mandatory training will be replaced, by the massed ranks of those not in education or employment.

According to the Department of Education, there were 976,000 of them aged 18 to 24 in 2011, so it's really just a matter of chucking a load of cash at PR people and Capita, and happy days.

I am, however, wondering whether the starting assumption is realistic. My understanding is that many of these NEETs do not join the Reserves because doing so would cause them to lose their Jobseekers' Allowance of £58.40 per week plus the benefits which are contingent on receipt of JSA, such as housing and council tax benefits.

JSA is only available to those who work less than 16 hours per week. A TA weekend is (in practice) about 46 hours and weekday training evenings are 2.5 hours. Someone who attends weekday evening training every second week and one TA weekend per month is doing an average of 12.75 hours per week even if their hours worked on Annual Camp are excluded. It would take just part of a day per month in addition to the above for them to go over the threshold.

So a STAB private attending for two weekday evenings per week, one weekend and an additional half a day that month will be paid £152.39 for that month but would lose at least £253.07 in JSA plus housing benefit of at least a couple of hundred quid for that month, plus council tax benefit.

Last year, the JSA regulations were changed so that any JSA claim will remain open during the 15 days annual continuous training period and JSA payments will automatically resume when the trg ends. But I do not understand how those in the regional TA doing what I would regard to be the bare minimum are able to claim JSA at all.(*)

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

(*) without lying or omitting to inform the Benefits Agency of their having exceeded the 16-hour limit

Evening all!

Out of interest, has anyone recently done the PTI Basic at P'bright?

I've seen the other threads on here, and just wondered if anyone recently had been.

Firstly, the Mong question - is it taught by the PTI cap-badged DS? or just any PTI's.

Secondly, how much of a fuckabout is it? I'll really be fighting with work to get a third 2 week period off this year, which i can get, and seriously want the qual and work my way into that side of things, love phys and the buzz from it. but if it's anything like I've experienced as a SUT. I don't fancy the hassle involved to just be fucked about for the sake of it. in peoples opinion, do the DS actually want you to learn, and pass the course (I'm guessing like all courses, you can't just pass the phys tests and stay there, you have to actually show you can take lessons, fill the paperwork etc) or are they just looking for stabs to beast the fuck out of?

Cheers me dears, in advance.

Pension Reform Bill - effects on TA (SERPS) Pension

If my reading is correct the new Pension Reform Bill will be doing away with the Second Earnings Related Pension Schems (SERPS) by 2016. What impact...

If my reading is correct the new Pension Reform Bill will be doing away with the Second Earnings Related Pension Schems (SERPS) by 2016. What impact will this have on all of us long serving TA officers and soldiers?

Here is my understanding...

We all paid our National Insurance Contributions (NIC) in our civilian jobs didn't we? (Nods of head in the affirmative). Then when we joined up into the TA (or UDR/R IRISH HSPT) we also paid additional NIC (deducted at source) which I was told by a wise old Pay Corps Sgt Maj was 'Contracted into SERPS so you will get a bigger state pension when you hit 65 laddie".

So... me thinks that now, 'by a mere stroke of a pen' that in 2016 I will and you will, loose that little nest-egg enhancement to the state pension that I/we have paid into all these years and were looking forward to when we retire and start collecting our long awaited and long contributed too state pension with its nice little SERPS top up!

Wrong! By 2019 when I start to receive the state pension the Treasury bandits will have stolen it from me/you back in 2016.

Or am I loosing the plot... please tell me I'm wrong?

I have been tasked to organise a mess function in London and was hoping for some advice from anybody who has been put in a similar position.

My BSM would like to visit the Tower of London and have lunch in the Beefeater Mess. I have spoken to the Tower of London today and they inform me that for this to happen we have to get sponsored by a Warder. The only way to be sponsored by a warder is contacting one directly. Therefore does anyone have a contact number for a warder who would be willing to sponsor a Royal Artillery unit.

Secondly, accommodation is proving to be more expensive than most of my fellow seniors budgets, I was therefore wondering if anyone knew of any good, reasonably priced hotels in London. I have contacted the Union Jack club and Victory services club and I am waiting to hear back.

Any advice/help is very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance......
