Given the level of experience and ability demonstrated on the forum, it seems like a good place to ask. I've decided that I'm going to upgrade my aging Canon 500D for something newer and am looking for some help making my mind up. It's been a good learning platform and still takes decent photos but I don't think I'm getting the most out of my photography by sticking with it.

My parameters are: an ideal budget of £1000-1500 (although I can stretch a bit more if there's a slamdunk case); my existing collection of L-lenses which I'm not replacing under any circumstances; and the need to occasionally shoot decent quality video.

So far, I've looked at the Canon 7D and 6D as well as a second-hand 5D MkII. Does anyone have any experience of these or alternative suggestions that I haven't played with yet?

After having a look in Boots and various other department stores, I couldn't find a photo album that tickled my fancy. I took a lot of photos on Herrick. Rather than having them on a laptop and sharing that way, I thought having them printed off in a photo album would be the best way. I am looking for an album where I can sit a picture, with space underneath each picture for a couple of lines so I can write a date and place and perhaps a description of what was going on. Taking heed from my grandad's old wartime album.

Thanks

Nothing too specific.

I'm pondering a new body but suspect I won't really see any big differences so had thought about a better lens, which may help.

Looking at lenses the Canon L series seemed great until I saw the price, then I noted (ebay) these:

Sigma EX 70-200mm F/2.8 APO HSM DG OS Lens

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

Not being hugely savvy, from what I read the f/2.8 compares with the Canon's 300m - can that be right? What I'm really after is a better quality lens than the one I presently have and if possible additional zoom, for the sports matches.

I know this will make decent photographers shake their heads in frustration - its too easy with DSLRs to ignore the basics and just crack on.

So, any advice, gratefully received.

I've been diving since the early 90's and have decided I'd like to get into underwater photography. It must be an age thing as I recall when I was younger I absolutely loathed diving with a photographer; they would generally hang around a single coral head for about 20 minutes to get a half decent picture of a creature so small you could just about use it as a tooth pic.

So far my experience, as much as it is, has been with:

A one use 35mm camera which was useless.

A reusable but very cheap 35mm camera, again useless.

A second hand 5mp Sony camera with housing which Mizz K13 lost on the third dive in Tenerife! But the images downloaded from the first two dives were not very good anyway.

Before we went to Mexico last year I bought a Veho Gumball 3000 HD camera and housing and it's really quite good. I also used it on the BLESMA Red Sea diving trip last year and, about 90% of the footage on the final movie came from my camera:

It's a good little machine but the limitations are that once in the housing you can only take video, it's only rated to 30m (although I had it down to 45, stopped working but didn't leak!) and it's poor in low light with no way of fixing a video light to it.

So I'm thinking of getting something to allow me to improve my video and take decent pics. I have looked at:

An Ikelite housing for my Nikon D90 but pretty much discounted that for cost as well as I don't want to risk flooding my D90!

An Ikelite housing for my Nikon Coolpix S9300 but with light and filter will come to 600-700 quid. And I'm worried about spending that kind of money when I know the camera is fairly slow particularly in low light.

So I thought about this:

Sealife DC1400 Elite underwater digital camera Package Pro Light Set + bag UK | eBay

Pros are that the Sealife DC1400 has a dedicated housing and video light built for the camera and that it also has colour correction modes built in for underwater photography. And HD video!

So my question is; does anyone have any experience with the Sealife DC1400 (or other model) camera set-up? or do you have anything else you'd recommend (budget of about £700). Cheers.
