Re: Army to Police
Siggie, how old are you? 'Cos I'm getting a distinct heat sig of a 19-year old X Box shoot-em-up 'wizard' who stays up too late.
............and a real odour of 'wanna go ParaSAS an' slot ragheads'.
Enlist, first, do some growing up, serve your time in whichever Regt or Corps is your choice - and then think of a second career.................and some years ago, CO19 used to have a policy of not touching squaddies with a 20' pole. Though this has possibly changed. The pen is mightier than the sword - until you meet someone who has knowledge of simple chemistry, metal forging and ballistics.
Be warned: I bear malice.

Re: Army to Police
Siggie, believe me and i know that every other PC on here will back me up, if you follow your career plan and leave the Army for the Police your experience in handling weapons will count for nothing. When filling out an application form and being interviewed for any specialist post previous experience holds no sway at all. All the Human resources and bean counters are interested in is how many examples you can give about what a diverse person you are and how many times you have challenged inappropriate behaviour.

Of course 10+ years ago,had you joined with that attitude it would have been belted out of you down the cell passageway by your tutor. Seen it first hand a few times

Re: Army to Police
Fair enough, naivety on my part.
For information, I'm joining the signals and hoping to get to 7Sig where i can do my para. From here i thought this would give me an advantage when applying for CO19 or similar. The reason i thought this was because i see similaritys in their work, e.g, escorting etc..
After seeing the replys i now see why this was a stupid question, but as you can see i had no clue (to which i now have much clarity, thank you :D ).
Yeah, as a few of you have suggested i'll just stick to the one career!

Sorry. This isn't me, i think what has made me think this way though is how its portrayed in the media, including games.

Best of luck with your chosen career path but I'm struggling to see how fumbling around in the dark whacking up a dipole is going to make you a crack shot.

Would a leaving RMP still have to join the police from the bottom and do a 2 year probation?

Ok in fairness to you, I did now have internet access before I joined the army, you have far more at your disposal to make a fool of yourself.
Have you asked these same questions at your ACIO, I would like to join signals leave signals become a para police sharpshooter james bond.
You will be presented with all sorts of possibilitys if you successfully pass basic training, trade training, and show some ability when at your first working unit.
As a final point, you haven't joined yet, and you are asking questions about resettlement.

To me it was a simple question, is it easier to join firearms units from the army? Specialist units such as the paras i thought would hold a big shiny star on your application to the police (if its so big to the ministrys defence i would have thought cheshires defences would have been happy to have you).
Now i know, im still happy, i'll stick to my trade and work on that. However, had i not asked and just assumed on this point, well wouldn't i have been a little more than pissed on finding this out a couple of years in to my contract...

The above comment from PISX_STAINED_PANTS is exactly right. I am a firearms cop and been in the Police for 9 years after serving 8 years in the Army... Ex forces means nothing in regards to getting in firearms. When i applied for firearms i had to do a fitness test, assessment day, firearms exam, role plays and interview. I do know of ex forces who got onto the 6 weeks initial firearms course and failed. The shooting with the Glock pistol is difficult with fast and short timed exposures. The pistol is something i had never used in the Army so i had no advantage over anyone else, but saying that with the G36 assault rifle my Army training did help....
