Re: Aquariums - too much hassle?

I kept a 180 litre fresh water aquarium in Germany, which I sold on prior to my return to UK. I kept all the usual suspects, guppies, neons, puffers, plecs, etc. Like others have said, don't panic about the technical aspects too much. A quick half water change every other month, as well as the occasional filter medium rinse, and you'll do fine. (Top tip; the larger the aquarium, the less likely you are to have problems.)

I plan to keep a marine tank one day, but only after I've finished buggering about in the army.

Instead of having fish tanks take up Diving.
There was some Matey in the press a few years ago who turned part of his lounge into a giant fish tank; it was a huge floor to celling thing. So while Mrs Matey sat down watching Coronation Strasse he got his mask and snorkel and went for a swim with his fish

I have been a diving instructor for 16 years, long haired CO has similiar experience - she wants a tank 'cos the Red Sea is not possible every weekend.
I'm going to redesign the lounge this year, so tank size and shape is a planning factor. I don't live in one place, so ideally I would like something self sufficient for up to a week or two. I also cannot invest serious time in fussing about.
Thanks for all the tips, its looking like my salt water preference may have to be ditched in favour of fresh.
Been looking at Amazon for good books - any recommendations?

I used to have a fresh coldwater fish tank.

I used to buy tropical fish, chuck them in, and 9 times out of 10 they would survive for many years.

I bought some shrimp once, but they didnt like it, they were dead within minutes.

The best thing I ever had was Xenopus albino frogs - awesome. They got out a few times, and I'd find them somehwere covered in fluff.

Albino frogs are possibly the funniest additions to any freshwater tank you could get. I had 3 in my tank (All called Dave). Used to eat out of my hand and everything. Agree about the houdini antics and finding them covered in fluff also! Mine lasted about 4 years 'til one got bloat disease then...
