    DAC kennels refused licence

    Published Date: 09 September 2008
    By Michael Cooke
WEDNESDAY 8AM: The Defence Animal Centre, which trains dogs for combat zones around the world, may face legal action over the state of its kennels.
Melton Council's animal licensing officer found 'significant deterioration' in the dogs' accommodation and refused to issue an Animal Boarding Establishment licence saying urgent action was needed.

The Ministry of Defence conceded that the kennels, in Welby Lane, Melton, needed to be replaced and said it was actively negotiating with the private company that manages them for this to be done.

In a statment it said: "We are fully aware the kennels at the Defence Animal Centre require replacement. Realm (the company) currently manages all of the facilities at the centre, and we are working urgently with them to establish how and when a replacement plan is to be put in place.

"At the same time, we are ensuring that the essential trained dog and handler output to the services continues to meet operational requirements.

"We have, and continue to be, in constructive negotiations with Realm which has acknowledged its responsibility for the proper repair and replacement of the kennels."

Melton Council's rural, economic and environmental affairs committee said it would defer a decision on whether or not to prosecute to give the two parties time to resolve the matter and it stressed that cleanliness at the centre was of a good standard.

However, it warned that if no solution can be found the matter will be referred back to a special meeting or its next meeting in November for further consideration.
Human or animal, it seems that nobody is immune from being screwed over by contractors!
    I wonder how one can:

    a. be passively negotiating

    b. continue to be in unconstructive negotiations
Not married are you Balleh ?
I am and I take your point !

    DAC

Its hardly surprising considering the amount of money that DAC wastes on buying rubbish dogs from Europe (3,500 Euros a pop) that go on to binned when at the same time trying to screw breeders oer in the UK by offering a quarter of the money for dogs that are much better. When the RAF are in charge of procurement, its OK. When the muppets from RAVC are running procurement it all goes to shit. You know who you are WOII dipstick

Are dogs not donated from the general public any longer?

edited to add that I didn't realise that the crab handler above hadn't read the date. However, the question still stands; aren't dogs donated any longer?

A mate runs a kennels and the random inspections they carry out are ruthless, if you have a tiled floor in the kennels and they find any cracked then you have 24hrs to replace it or they will withhold the licence..... that just one example. The inspections can be really harsh, but it does give dog owners some reassurance when they want to leave little Rover at some kennels

I know nothing of the current state of Melton, but it wasn't in the best nick some 8 years ago....

I got my dog from DAC in Jan 08 - failed the explosives sniffing course. She had been recruited from Battersea and I understood that most of the dogs they got came from a similar route. The kennels at that time were not good, essentially concrete boxes.

Following the story through the local press, I find:

    Novenber 2008:
    Animals moved from unfit kennels

    August 2010:
Plans for new kennels for hero dogs of war have stalled.

January 2011, more than two years after the original story:
Work is to start on building kennels urgently needed to house military dogs used in Afghanistan.

    Typical PFI efficiency, it seems.

Few of lifes problems cannot be solved by the liberal application of High Explosive.
