I am looking forward to Brown watching his vote vapourise in the constituency that is right next door to his.
Re vote of confidence, There are enough Labour MP's who can see that an election this year may return them to Westminster, albeit in opposition. Most of them know that in 2 years time their chances of being returned will be considerably diminished, maybe returned to Westminster, but probably as the 3rd party.
If a confidence vote is tabled, there is a chance that some Labour MP's just may vote with the oppostion and get this god awful government out of office. Self preservation is a wonderful instinct, particularly when they may be permanently parted from the trough!

Unlucky mate

"John MacDougall gave more than thirty years of distinguished public service to Fife - as a councillor, leader of the Fife council, convenor of Fife council and then Member of Parliament for Central Fife and he will be remembered as a true servant of the people".
I presume he had a proper job in his early years and was exposed to asbestos then.

They'll do all they can to delay the by-election, and they'll get all the top brass of Zanu-NL up there, and if there's any decency in the world, they'll lose.
Broon will then face a huge back-bench rebellion, and it'll be touch-and-go if he stays. If he goes then Dave will have all the ammunition he needs to insist on an election, but I think it could turn very ugly. It may be better for Dave if Broon stays, as he'll be terminally wounded.
Expect some fireworks. I'll be the one selling tin-hats on Ebay.

Fascinating. On a human level, condolences to Mr MacDougall's widow and family, of course, but what a political kick in the goolies for Gordon! The very last thing he'll want is another hammering at the polls as soon as MPs return from their 'well-earned' 40-week holiday, or whatever it is, as he knows that could be Endex for him personally. Zanu NL's annual conference starts on 20 Sep - could they be forced to hold a by-election before then? Is there any time limit following the death of an incumbent? Does anybody know the 'constitutional' position?

I trust a 10,000+ majority disappearing into thin air will be met with the same out of touch ignorance and bluster from all aboard the accursed HMS Cyclops' Misadventure. Despite being beached in unfriendly territory, surround by massed hordes of savages baying for their blood, mutiny on the Bounty being the order of the day and no survival options in sight, still these arrogant tw*ts deny there anything wrong. Cyclops desperately needs acceptance and something that will save him from being a foul and dirty smudge in the history books, but all he is doing is prolonging the agony and heightening our morbid amusement at his 5hitty leadership. Rock on the landslide defeat in the by-election.
