First Steam Engine Built In Britain For 60 Years

Spotters rejoice. The first steam train to be built in Britain in 50-yrs has rolled out of the Darling Locomotive Works. It's a replica of the A1 Pacific Class, engine number 60163.

Sadly, the boiler was sourced from Germany.... sad state of our heavy engineering.

Here's the link so you can she her.

    Ah, the train-spotters thread!

You're right about the state of British Heavy Engineering though.

Question is, will it run on time?

But PTP , why is this still in Current Affairs I hear some of you enquire..

Because I think we're going back to the future, and I think Steam will be an alternative power. source, especially in light of recent events regarding the activities of the energy companies.PROWORD B*stards.

Any of you who have lived in the Eastern Europe for any time as I have, will remember how apartment blocks were heated?

And of course, I know a lot of you are fans of the days of Imperial locomotion :D

Personally I think it wonderful that Britain can still produce individuals and companies capable of such projects :D
He had bought a large map representing the sea,
Without the least vestige of land:
And the crew were much pleased when they found it to be
A map they could all understand.

I wonder how long it will be before we open the pits back up? We are at the mercy of foreign countries who own our power companies whilst stood on a load of coal.
The National railway museum at York is a great day out and steam trains are much more interesting -err well to some of us. Where did I leave my anorak.....

True. There were some copper mines down in Cornwall recently reopened because prices had climbed so high, they'd become economically viable again!

Two pits in Wales ahve been reopened.

This year they're expected to produce 100,000 tons with the full stream production target being 700,000 tons per annum.

If I remember correctly other pits in the UK are also being inspected for possible reopening.

I live in south Yorks we have loads of coal underground. I imagine we might have a shortage of skilled miners. My Dad might be able to man a shearing machine for a few hours or at least learn someone how to do it. Wonder if we can demolish all the new housing estates that were built on the old pit land?

    Thats the problem
You could open 100 old and new pits but whose going to go down them?
Even the youngest minors are probably in their late 30's early 40's
Most wil have new jobs or doing very well out of the dole
Most young lads are at home with their 14 y,o girlfriends and the kids

Why go down t'pit when you can have it all on a plate and blame Thatcher

Polish Miners will be arriving on platform 6 on t'old train to steal our jobs thaa'll see
We should remember the tremendous contribution of the Queen Mother to the war effort:
As the BBC pointed out, she 'bravely remained in London beside her husband' during the war.
This contrasts sharply with the actions of my grandfather who, on the declaration of war immediately left his wife and children and pissed off, first to France, then North Africa, Italy, France (again) and finally Germany.
The shame will always be with us.

Just out of interest, what would be the fuel source for new steam trains? Coal? Fuel made from coal? Oil? Gas?
