That' proved a bit of a problem in recent years. The fact that 100's of AQ sympathisers/suspected members have tried to apply and have been binned at the security vetting stage had hampered recruitment. Also, both Sunni and Shia terrorist groups are notoriously suspicious of any non - Muslim/non - pious Muslims trying to infiltrate their midst. Its very suspicious if you get someone completely unknown to the community suddenly turning up all cammed up in 'conservative' regalia at the mosque, trying to be a jihadi - they usually get pinged for what they are. CIA (always appalling at HUMINT, spouters of the 'money solves all technique' of intelligence gathering) have never got around this one. In the UK, the Walt factor also screens out a lot of twts trying to be James Bond, but the people they actively want to recruit (young, well educated Pakistani/British males) are traditionally reticent about coming forward. They are being used, but not in the numbers our security services would like.

It would be awful if British muslims were apprehended in Afghanistan and brought to justice. So as a policy, anyone wearing a Villa/WBA/Birmingham City shirt should be shot on sight. Not just in Afghanistan to be on the safe side...
