I'm sure that once the said Eastern European Mafia bloke has lowered his hand after swearing some garbled rubbish in his native tongue (as I can't speak english your honour) that he will lay down his pistols forever.

What an utter loads of Bollox.

Remember that the bloke who thinks this a good idea is also the bloke who thought the Iraq was was legal. Second time round, anyway.

He's a highly political animal and I wouldn't be at all surprised this is being floated to start an argument away from issues they don't want mentioned, like their failure to actually do anything to make it a country to be proud of. Wallpapering over the cracks like this is the sort of thing you'd expect from people who're about to leg it and want to offload a dodgy property. We may wind up in the EU purely because nobody else wants to run us!

And I agree with previous posters; it just isn't British.
We need people who look to the stars, holding the nation and the world in their hearts but at the same time we need down-to-earth people who can do serious and trying work.

In a definite sense, a country's power and prestige isn't only a reflection of its economic power but also a reflection of its people's quality and morality. Moreover, I think the latter is actually more important in the long-term.

What a load of C**p How can these idiots talk about being British when correct me if i am wrong but Britain consist of England Scotland Wales and NI and this government to secure the votes promised devolution and split Britain up not only that but ensure that the divide is concrete by biased governing in favour of north of the border.
This is not a grip about the Scots but how can you preach about being British when in essence it does not exists.
It was like Blair's fight against terrorism the first thing he done was release convicted Irish terrorist good move.

National service was never about getting scumbags off the street, keep it in the 50's with bad hair and pap music. National service was about having a service big enough to make the commitments of the time.

Johny foreigner will say anything to get a hold of our free tax payers money. I dare say that the cnuts will probably also get an allowances package for travelling to do it.

Meanwhile, old Ethel and Arthur sit in there house with no lights or heating on and are to scared to go out for fear of being mugged by some scumbag.

Just another way of creating more scumbag Labour voters to keep the fat cnuts in control of Britain.

We should have a mass exodus of tax payers, all should sell up, pay of debts and jump ship for sunnier climes, obviously taking the olds with us, and leave the sponging scumbags to fight for whats left...

National service means just that. It doesn't have to be military, although there is a shortage of manpower at the moment. In a country that has had to open it's borders to immigration to maintain economic growth whilst millions who are capable of working here don't, I would say, as a nation we are not capable of "making the committments" of our time.

As has been posted here, a pledge of allegiance is meaningless without service of some description.

More wallpapering over the cracks from a government who have willingly overseen a decade of the destruction of the very fabric of the nation. Liberal policies on law and order that make crime a worthwhile career choice (judges ordered not to jail the estimated 1% of burglars that get caught because the jails are bursting), the NHS underfunded, understaffed and riven by infection, the armed services treated with barely concealed contempt, open door immigration policy that overwhelm small communities with cheap as chips labour, favoured housing and crime, police that do anything but be seen on the streets and an education system that vilifies our history while giving out A levels to everyone.

    Proud to be British?

    Yes.

    Proud of modern Britain?

    I was once.
