First, this thread is about the retirement of Paisley, not Martin McGuinness, who I also have no liking for, BTW.
Second, I am not Catholic, nor even religious, but for me to call Big Ian a hate filled bigot is truly an understatement. In the past, he has said of the Catholic church, "We know your church to be the mother of harlots and the abomination of the earth." He has called Pope John XXIII a "Roman anti-Christ" and his Church the "Harlot of Babylon". When the Pope died, Paisley said, "This romish man of sin is now in hell" (and who appointed you God and judge big Ian?)
When loyalists burnt Catholic families out, he said, "Catholic homes caught fire because they were loaded with petrol bombs; Catholic churches were attacked and burned because they were arsenals and priests handed out sub-machine guns to parishioners; and the massive discrimination in employment and shortage of houses for Catholics were simply because they breed like "rabbits" and multiply like "vermin".
And this diatribe. "they (Catholics) are the enemy within Northern Ireland a Protestant state...." and "Catholics do not want a share in the government of Northern Ireland. They want Northern Ireland to be destroyed... Even if they were to join a government it is only until such time as they can destroy the Government and the state." On discrimination against Catholics, "Keep Protestant and loyal workers in employment in times of depression in preference to their fellow Catholic workers."
So one of the few Northern Ireland politicians not connected to terrorism retires. Meawhile McGuiness and Adams are being paid from my taxes to do fcuk all except not try to start the IRA up again.
Sorry, have I missed something here... "Ulster Resistance", anybody remember that (or a shed-load of AK47s they had?)
I suppose they'll say his last thoughts were of simple things, Of April back at home, and the late sun on his wings; Or that he murmured someone else's name, As earth reclaimed him sheathed in flame. Oh God! Let's have no more of empty words, Lip service ornamenting death! The worms don't spare the hero; Nor can children feed upon resounding praises of his deed. 'He died who loved to live,' they'll say, 'Unselfishly so we might have today!' Like hell! He fought because he had to fight; He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

So were Sinn Fein / IRA. Does that make them right as well?

Basically, the current NI assembly is the first NI government in 50 years that has not has Ian Paisley standing on the outside p1ssing in. The current agreement was basically on the table in 1973, but the big Ian decided to wreck it then.
All the rhetoric about him being part of the solution is ignoring the fact that up until recent times he was a very large part of the problem. He's of the opportunistic mould as the other Chuckle brother, and the fact that they eventually went into government together to my mind proves they were two sides of the same coin.

If you were from NI, you would most like feel differently, even if you did personally despise him as a bigot. Whether he has truly changed his views or not only he knows, but is not the issue. Point is, he has played a large part in the peace process and the stablisation of NI.
In the same way that the tw@ who rocks the rowing boat decides to sit down and stop fcuking about..?

Basically, yes. But point is, could not have been done until the b@stard decided, for whatever his reasons, to sit down.
