At present the ecomomic and political costs outweigh the benefits of developing a nuclear capability, if that is seen not to be the case, and more countries are arming, then there is nothing to stop proliferation.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt have already made rumblings along these lines (although that might be something to do with the kebabs Saudi funded the Pakistan nuke programme and presumably could call in favours there if it thought it needed nukes in a hurry.

George mate, It borders Afghanistan, and the Pakistan `fighters` (I hate that terminology) are taking the p*ss, they`ve got nukes too, had no-one told you?

Where do we attack from? Is it not likely that an attack on Shia Iran will mean alienate the Shias of Iraq further? We may be in an ideal position to attack from Iraq and Afghanistan but do we really want a war on a 3rd front? Especially bearing in mind we are already slowly losing one.

Perhaps the answer is to withdraw from Iraq - mass forces in Afghanistan let the Israelis deal with Iran ( who I agree cannot be alowed Nukes) - unifying the middle East against them and take the whole lot on at once - Armageddon anyone?

Getting back to the point though, somethings defo going to happen, rumblings getting louder with Iran, UK and our American allies its just a matter of timing before it all kicks off, and much as I hate to say it I dont think it'll be quite the war Telic was, I havent even thought about a pre-emptive strike by Israel either, would the fallout get our boys in Basra? would they know in advance?? scary thing living in the world these days

I was reading about this. Even with an accelerated program Iran won't be able to produce a single warhead until 2009.

Personally, I think that the Iranian sites need to have a little "nuclear" accident via Israel. Just have to make sure the missile defense system works

I know that the US has been actively engaging in it's own sort of insurgency in Iran stirring up the pot.

One would think that if we (meaning the coalition, such that it is) took out Iran, most of the rest of the middle east would fall in line but I think the consequences from such an invasion would put us in a bad light in the worlds eyes.

Perhaps one game plan might be to destabilise a cohesive nation state into a bunch of warring mini tribal states incapable of doing much more than murdering each other (and of course any foreign troops who happen to be hanging around) and struggling to get the water to come out of the tap again rather than developing nukes to chuck around

Hey, if we pis s them all off enough by invading Iran maybe they would stop fighting each other, wage a proper war against the west and hey presto, the middle east would be unified and stable!!

How many suicide bombers have the US and UK endorsed? I would think that would be a pretty good reason. We don't believe in the 72 virgins BS.

not read through all the post but

nuclear question is wrong with the us naval assets in the gulf they could reduce iran to a pile of ash.

we will not attack iran - due to oil - they can stop or halt most of the oil being transported from that region. western world / US relies on oil to much to attack iran.

sooner we develope a large scale alternative means of energy then the better then we can send all these rag heads to allah.
