My Afrikaans has all but disappeared in the past 12+ years, but the memory cogs recall 'kerel' as an affectionate term used by young girlies talking to their boyfriends .... or, from one you chap to his boyfriend. In otherwords, it's closer to 'darling' than 'mate'.
I'm not sure what effect an inquiry would have on the morale of the troops in Iraq. I imagine they have more to do than watch or hear reports of the inquiry should it begin.
I also believe that morale is maintained by frequent mail from home; access to communication links to home; confidence in the medical chain from battlefield to regaining full fitness (not the current Treasury led shambles of ending up in some civvy hospital); living conditions; manning levels; proper rations and water supplies; clear political direction ( I fear this element will not be present); clear and concise orders flowing down the chain of command (I think this is probably satisfactory); fewer visits from politicians (so that guys are not hauled from beds to 'doughnut' the latest grinning spiv to visit. Together with other elements known to the newest Lance Corporal and oldest Staff Officer.
If I was there I would welcome an inquiry but sadly it would be set up to ensure that T Bliar came out as pure as driven snow.
