Am I missing something or should they have been at home tucked up in bed?

Should children of this age even be watching this type of film, let alone watching it at that time of night/morning? No wonder people are becoming so desensitised and finding events such as this to be laughable or worse, doable.
It's a PG13 in the Sates, it's the school holidays and it's a fucking Batman film.

FFS, they've just announced on the news that ODEON will be searching bags across the UK at tonight's showings. what is the likelihood of being able to pull off a multinational shooting spree when you're (as it seems right now) a US survivalist and WACO style nut job!. Most of them don't know or care of the world beyond the states anyway.

I can't make up my mind whether this is a stupid decision by an ODEON jobsworth or a cynical attempt to bolster publicity!

They had gone to the Cinema to watch a film for Christ's sake!
Those who wish to come back with the usual "dry your eyes princess" bollocks can fuck right off.

    Werewolf, are your ears burning?
My dear chap, even if I were so inclined - and frankly it sounds too much like hard work - I would not have slaughtered my innocent brother Nerds watching Dark Knight Rises. Unless, of course, they were talking while I was trying to enjoy the film; that is grounds for Justifiable Homicide.

Killing people who were trying to watch the greatest superhero film ever made? I'm sorry, but that's worse than evil. It's...uncool.

A sinister attempt to boost popcorn sales by refusing to let people in with their own food and drink more like.

I always get my Haribo on in the co-op before I get to the cinema, ODEON can have my starburst mix when they pry them from cold dead fingers.

    Epic fail.
Really, did they call that out? Not the postal pistol again!

From what I read he had body armor, gas mask, gas canister, two pistols, a shotgun, an assault rifle from what I've read. Oh and Denver PD think he's booby trapped his apartment and his Ma immediately said "you have the right man" when told.

This cracked med student thinks he's a Terminator.

Ideal for home defense, I wonder how many times that line gets used by a guy thinking, "What a loon!".

Well this is the country that panicked when some bearded numpty set his arse on fire in Glasgow airport. ODEON probably thought a bit of reassuring security theatre was necessary to reassure the cowering punters.

Actually I was just guessing on that bit as it seems to be the spree killers conceable weapon of choice at the minute but I don't think we will be suprised to learn he had two self loaders with extended mags of some description on top of the "assaullt rifle" and a sawn off.

If the armed citizenry has a whit of sense they'll be running away rather than trying to reenact die hard and that is what will come naturally to most folk without intensive training. Apart from the physical risk playing the hero against a determined murderer with superior firepower can involve an awful lot of lawyer time in most US states.

This is rather different from a run of the mill criminal activity. Even for trained cops these can be very confusing situations. In that Giffords shooting in Arizona a cool headed armed member of the public did intervene but fortunately hesitated and did not shoot the heroic guy who'd just disarmed the nutter bare handed. If he'd been some trigger happy balloon things might have been even more tragic.

In a para-millitary nut job mass shooting it's is even worse. Breivik was confronted by an armed security guard but his cop getup caused the guy to hesitate. Some kids ran at him, he just clamly shot them. Heavily armed Indian police in Mumbai were thwarted by poor training, suicidal attackers with body armor and superior firepower. The cops elderly SMLE's, Stens and occasional SLRs were far more suitable weapons than the typical defensive handgun carried in the US. There was a lot of sneering about this but LAPD only did a little better in the North Hollywood shootout, against a couple of amateur Ned Kelly's trying to shoot their way out.

It's in sometimes leisurely high school and workplace mass shootings where an attacker and his victims are acquainted and surroundings familiar that a defense seems more likely but here often guns are barred. Not sure it would be a great idea to habitually arm the average over stressed geography teacher anyway, they're probably at a real high risk of going postal themselves.
    Alib,

I was being mildly sarcasric - possibly the result of listening to too many Americans enthusiatically describe their armouries and give it the big one about what they would do in a given situation.
