It's not often I'll comment on a RIP thread but it took some stones to confront an armed man while unarmed.

    A truly brave man.
Weren't the RUC allowed to carry personal weapons off duty?

I agree that it's not a road most police officers would want to go down. And unless we start seeing MP's and bankers being shot on a daily basis, no politician will be willing to go down in history as the PM who armed the police force.

Add to that the sheer logistical problems of equipping and training tens of thousands of police officers, and it's a safe bet we won't see an armed police force anytime soon.

Prison officers carried off duty as well IIRC. Different situation though from being a 'legitimate target' for terrorists in NI and being a Police officer not at work on an English street.

Even if we were to arm all our Police on the streets I wouldnt want to see them carrying off duty. To much opportunity for the Emperor Mong to have a word and for weapons going walkabout for my liking.

Agreed. In any case a significant percentage, if not an outright majority, of police officers don't want to carry weapons while on duty. And there is neither the money nor the political will to force the kind of sea-change that would be necessary.

Once when I was younger I was walking through tottenham pissed up, and tried to fight back when some lads tried to mug me. I got a small stab wound. Does that mean everyone should carry knives to protect themselves? It's hardly like police officers are being shot on a daily basis is it?

RIP to this bloke though, thoughts to his family and all the other stuff you are meant to say.

Seems as if the gunman has turned up dead in a churchyard.

No shots fired by police, the church is in Writtle. The gunman alledgedly didn't have a FAC.
