However, there was a sort of gentleman's understanding (even among the chavvier elements) that nobody was going to punch you to oblivion or jump on your head. You'd also get left alone if you kept your head down. Then, at some point in the early 2000's, somebody was stabbed to death. Unfortunately, that does seem to be the way of things these days.
    Sounds like an amaaaaaazzzzinnnggg place.....

Call me a bit of a Liberal but I personally think the sentences were too light.

14 and 12 years would have been more realistic in my book.

Apart from shooting pistols at police helicopters during riots, what do you have to do to get a decent sentence these days?

If they've not got enough to contend with on tour they get badly injured on a night out.
They should hand them over to RM Provo staff to serve their 8 years

BTW was there any recriminations between the units?
I'm sure one of the old and bold will be along to tell us of Bedfords racing tyo the pub the following night and teh RSM & C.O. shovig the lads in the local boozer wher the other unit drank.
We should remember the tremendous contribution of the Queen Mother to the war effort:
As the BBC pointed out, she 'bravely remained in London beside her husband' during the war.
This contrasts sharply with the actions of my grandfather who, on the declaration of war immediately left his wife and children and pissed off, first to France, then North Africa, Italy, France (again) and finally Germany.
The shame will always be with us.

The only people stupid enough to target a couple of innocent lads because someone else from their unit did something are the same kind of idiots who are currently having their rectums stretched.

Hands up, got the ingredients of the offence wrong for attempt murder. My opinion still stands with regards to attempted murder being an appropriate charge in this case. Intent was clearly evident but at what level was that intent?

The fight had been won and the assailants did not leave it at that, the argument would be, what would have happened had the intervention not took place...
No worries chief, I did have to go and have a long read myself Sadly the blackstones' I've got in the house in 2005, and i had to look it up on the CPS site.

A fair point as to what would happen if no one stepped in. Would certainly help the "more than merely preparatory" bit of the attempt!

Prisons are full throughout the country. So the guidelines do seem to be exercised at the lighter end, and where possible non-custodial are handed out at the Magistrates.

I suppose we should build some more Prisons, but I would imagine the Government wants the private sector to do it.

Mods and what? Back in the day? Apologies, big Jim. I've obviously touched on an insecurity. I'm sure your generation was just as 'hard' as mine. Do you want a Kleenex? They're man size.

My point is not that some sort of golden age existed. More that even in the time of the Vikings, it was possible to square away an argument in a 'fair' scrap. There's no such thing now.

As an aside, and not ralating to the case in any way, in the film and book 'Hawaii', by James A Michener, one of the main protagonists, played by Richard Harris in the film, says after battering one of the natives -

'When you've got a man beat, kick him in the face.'

PS. Sorry to be a bit off-thread.

I'm 37. There's never been any such thing as squaring away an argument by knocking fuck out of each other. Youre talking pish. I'll prove it by beating you up in the metaphorical pub car park if you want.
You can either accept the beating and therefor loose the argument( I'll stick to your man code and not kick you while you're down) or you can get pissed off getting punched by someone harder than you and stab me or something which is more likely to happen......your fair fight nostalgia is daft.
