Most murderers have never been offenders before, they never offend again after. Most people are killed by people they know and it's the result of domestic disputes, victims of mental or physical abuse, mental illness, drink dependancy, poverty and other factors.

It's very rarely the work of some evil killer as portrayed in the Daily Mail.

No I'm guessing the murderers who killed people as a result of domestic disputes probably won't re-offend unless you happen to piss them off; refuse to submit to their will; or you're #2 wife who thinks #1 wife asked for it...!

All of those points are correct. However, open prisons are also being used to absorb the overspill from secure prisons that are full. This means that unsuitable, open prisons are being used to house dangerous criminals who should be in more secure establishments.

There have been hundreds of escapes from Hollesley Bay in recent years. IIRC it was also the prison where there was a riot after Prison Officers tried to stop lags nipping out to a nearby off licence.

I'm not in favor of the death penalty for every murderer, since mistakes can and have been made. But if your are convicted of murder, then from that point on your life should effectively be over: you should be locked in a cell 24/7. No luxuries of any kind - TV, books etc - just the bare essentials for survival. No second chances at life, because your victim certainly won't get one.

That's what it should be like for the people who deserve it. Another thing that has always seemed strange to me is people are getting released after a life sentence. Shouldn't a life sentence be, well, life?

As of last year: 90% of criminals sentenced in England and Wales had offended before. Of those, almost a third had committed 15 or more crimes. Re-offending rates were highest among those who had previously been found guilty of serious and/or violent offences.

You're absolutely right, Jarrod; I should leave it to the experts. They are clearly doing a magnificent job of both rehabilitating criminals and protecting the public. Bravo.
