In fact a Welsh Labour MP, Madeleine Moon, pitched up at the debate to make the point that the "Golden thread" and national identity arguments apply equally in Wales. She also sought an assurance from the Minister "that no political interference is coming from No. 10 to protect Scottish regiments because of a fear of devolution?"
The Minister (Nick Harvey) said in his reply that "This restructuring is a piece of work that is being undertaken by the Army, and the Army will put its proposals forward when its review is complete. Reducing the size of the Regular Army from 102,000 to 82,000 will inevitably mean a reduction in the overall number of units that are available, and a number of critical criteria will inform the decisions about which units will be affected.
We must maintain the right balance across different capabilities—the Royal Armoured Corps, the infantry structure and the roles that different units will perform. We must also balance geographically because of the recruiting pattern; that has always been an important part of the British Army and it will continue to be in the future."
I had mentioned FF20, General Carter etc myself on Radio Scotland that morning.British Armed Forces Federation - www.baff.org.uk

Because whilst we have Scottish, Welsh, Irish regiments there are no "English" regiments as such? There's less attachment to them as national symbols than in the provinces. I suppose we could add "English" to some names - perhaps the Royal English Fusiliers - but it might affect recruitment from other parts of Britain and would make a mockery of allowing Commonwealth soldiers into them.

Bit rhetorical there, B'baisse. Can anyone really not know which line infantry regiments of the British Army are English?
Can Commonwealth soldiers not serve in the Royal Anglian Regiment, Yorkshire Regiment, or Mercian Regiment, each of which has a geography-linked title?Last edited by hackle; 24-05-2012 at 17:04.

What's this all about?
It's shite being Scottish! We're the lowest of the low. The scum of the ****ing earth.
The most wretched, miserable, servile, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilisation.
Some hate the English. I don't. They're just ****ers.
We, on the other hand are colonized by ****ers.
Can't even find a decent culture to be colonized by.
We're ruled by effete arseholes. It's a shite state of affairs to be in Tommy.
All the fresh air in the world won't make any difference!
