He came in a few weeks ago and said he had a fall just across the road on his way there. When he went home, one of the blokes walked with him to make sure he was ok. It turned out that he has had several falls and his daughter took him to the doctors for a checkup.

They stuck a portable monitor on him for 24hrs which he carried around with him while he went and did some shopping and a bit of gardening etc. After the 24hrs period, he took it back to the doctors. Two hours later, they rang his daughter and told her to get him up the hospital straight away where they had already booked a bed for him.

It turned out, he was a walking time bomb just looking for an excuse to collapse with fatal results. Two days after being rushed into hospital, they fitted him with a pacemaker and two days later he was sent home.

I think for all it's faults, and let's face it, there are plenty of them, there are still many many occasions where the NHS works miracles and saves lives.
Yup, we never hear the good reports. I'd a patient with a growth on his neck, seen within a week, growth removed and on chemotherapy a week later.

Aye. Eekanormics aside the NHS is how we choose to rumble, a knowing choice; and a high water-mark of civilisation. Those unfortunates from the rough end of the trench who encounter it are treated with dignity and given the opportunity to see the flip side. A 'client' from Middle-East found themselves dialling 999 and watched in amazement at the whole process unfolding with Teutonic calmness. It flies our values.

"As we moved slowly through the outskirts of the town we passed row after row of little grey slum houses running at right angles to the embankment. At the back of one of the houses a young woman was kneeling on the stones, poking a stick up the leaden waste-pipe which ran from the sink inside and which I suppose was blocked. I had time to see everything about her - her sacking apron, her clumsy clogs, her arms reddened by the cold. She looked up as the train passed, and I was almost near enough to catch her eye." Orwell, The Road to Wigan Pier

    Little knowledge of it?

How about seeing a bed being blocked by a hardened alcholic in th cardio unit because the Cnut had come in for the umpteenth time with 'chest pains' and then the Cnut fucks off when he gets a bollocking by the specialist who is sick to the back teeth of the drunken cnut ending up on his unit?

The Drs and Consultants at my local hospital call them 'professional patients' who will play the game for a few days R & R in a nice hospital.

Perhaps if they'd treated him for his alcoholism he may have made some improvement. Alcoholics are hard to treat in community, much easier in Hospital.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, you've spent your entire working life working public sector jobs with free healthcare. Now that you've retired from the Marines, you still qualify for free healthcare through the VA. From a financial point of view you're a bigger part of the problem than most.

Fucking well done them. They've kept an 89 year old man alive for another year or so at a cost of Christ knows what. Public money well spent.

Yes it is and if it was my dad I'd be really pleased about it.

Longevity seem's to run in my mate's family. His mum lived until she was 102 years of age. So the NHS may well consider they have spent their money on a worthwhile case!
I was a good runner in the mob. I alway's liked to think I could get out of trouble quicker than what I got into it!

Isn't it great to hear stories of the elderly being well cared for, the sort of people who have funded the NHS forever.

He refuses to be treated but knows that a 999 call and 'I've got pains in my chest' is a guaranteed trip to hospital and a few days for tests and observations. The only way he'll stop is when he's dead. Same with the other two in the 4 bed unit, one so fat he couldn't get about unaided, no surprise, he's got heart trouble and can't breath - and a quick look around the other wards showed that the morbidly obese made up an inordinate percentage of the patients. The other bloke has smoked himself into an early grave and won't stop. That's 3 out of 4 beds in a cardio ward blocked by lifestyle fuckups being kept alive at huge expense by the NHS while people like me, no, never smoked, don't drink much, not overly overweight are kept waiting down in ITU for a bed when they can finally send one of these professional waster class home. Of course, the full panoply of support workers and social workers have to be involved before they can be told to fuck off, but hey ho, its the 'addiction inustry'.
And that's whats going to finally break the NHS, 3 out of 4 patients in that cardio ward are non employed no contributors and professional patients doing a constant revolving door of treatments for a multitude of self inflicted health problems thanks to their refusal to adopt anything resembling a healthy lifestyle.
