Something which they have also quite clearly missed out on is that all this policing of countries who do not wish to be policed, is causing large segments of the world's lunatic asylums (particularly those of allegiance to some bloke called Allah) to take great offence to our countries unwanted involvement in their nations, and thus bring some quite unwanted involvement into ours.

All over Britain, in bedrooms, sheds, warehouse units, shop back-rooms, garages... and so on; there are crazed ragheads who, through a completely open border system (which is fucking ridiculous for an Island which is inherently the easiest thing to have controlled borders on), are currently building devices to blow british citizens' body parts all over the interiors of tube carriages and buses, and have absolutely no qualms with dying for Allah to take revenge on a country which, they have been convinced, is actively taking guns, bombs, and people to use them; into muslim countries; and blowing them apart.

There was an old joke which went:

A king woke up on his birthday one day and discovered that all of his army had gone. The king waited for several weeks, and eventually the army returned. Upon their return, the king asked of his generals, "where have you been?" The generals said, "for your birthday, we took a hundred trebuchets, a thousand horses, and all of your men, and we destroyed the castles of all your enemies". The king looked puzzled, and said "I don't have any enemies", to which the general pondered for a second, and said, "oh, well, you do now!"

I get the impression we're doing something similar. Yes we've taken the awfully noble task of going to the middle east, being nice to the locals, killing some Taliban and generally policing their country for a bit. But all we've really done, is slightly unfucked another country and in doing so completely fucked ours. We're spending billions of pounds on it in a time of recession, we've lost 400 decent soldiers, millions if not billions of pounds of decent kit, and all we have to show for it is a country which temporarily less fucked than it was, and thousands of angry ragheads within our own shores who are now highly determined to inflict maximum damage upon us because of our attack on Islam. All our recent attempts to revive fucked up Middle Eastern countries have achieved is convince our Muslim brethren that we have it in for them, and our fantastic human rights laws have allowed them free passage to come and give it back to us in their own time - and there's absolutely nothing we can do about it.

Once British civillians start being killed, there will be a serious change in public support. We have a dug a massive hole and sporadically having a couple of soldiers killed on the front line is only the tip of the iceberg compared to what is to come.

More recently I found myself in Aden for 6 or so months, (before the current dramas though) and spent a lot of time in the company of people who remembered the British presence very well as the only period of stability in their long and otherwise chaotic lives. The graves of the Fallen were respectfully, well tended – and had been through civil wars, Soviet influence and re-unification. Yours was a hopeless task but you left behind an example of what life [U]could[U] be like without the influence of a medieval mindset and self-serving 'political' gangsters. Perhaps that's the best we can hope for in Afghanistan.
I spent two years in Aden as a 'daughter-of', and have read a bit about events before and during that time since I grew up. Imho Aden is the model for what will happen in Afghanistan. All the infrastructure, irrigation, stability we built at great expense to taxpayers, as well as the lives of servicemen and their families, went to hell in a handcart not long after we left.

The only thing we learn from history is that we never learn from history.

I wept when I read the ages of the young lads in that warrior. Their whole lives were ahead of them.
And this you can see is the bolt. The purpose of this
Is to open the breech, as you see. We can slide it
Rapidly backwards and forwards: we call this
Easing the spring. And rapidly backwards and forwards
The early bees are assaulting and fumbling the flowers:
They call it easing the Spring.
They call it easing the Spring: it is perfectly easy
If you have any strength in your thumb: like the bolt,
And the breech, and the cocking-piece, and the point of balance,
Which in our case we have not got; and the almond-blossom
Silent in all of the gardens and the bees going backwards and forwards,
For today we have naming of parts.

Piss off Chubb, this isn't a site for you!

RIP to the lads, their families and their muckers that still have to battle on!
    spike7451 and Boldnotold like this.
The harder the fighting and the longer the war, the more the infantry and in fact all the arms, lean on the Gunners - Field Marshal Montgomery.

6 more names added to a list that was far too long when the first name went on it.

Sad news, thoughts are with the families.
