Another example of a failing among some nations and their militaries---"it may not be a very "good" (wise, sufficient national security threat etc.), "war," but it is the only one we have to go play in.

"A democracy cannot survive as a permanent form of government. It can last only until its citizens discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority (who vote) will vote for those candidates promising the greatest benefits from the public purse, with the result that a democracy will always collapse from loose fiscal policies, always followed by a dictatorship." I genuinely think that modern politicians enjoy the limelight/glory/excitment/call it whatever you like of sending men to war. They get lots of pictures of themselves stood on top of a Chally 2 or on the deck of an aircraft carrier with pointy jets and it all looks very sexy on the evening news.

Of course, it's no-one they know sweating their tits off in some third world shit hole or on the air med missing some of the bits that used to be attached or even living in those dumps hoping their kids aren't going to be the next ones to get stuck in the middle of a firefight so why should they really care about that?

Slotting the pirates who threaten our shipping. Yes, I think that was part of the rationale for deploying the Spanish Armada. If the CIA said there were terrorists on the moon there'd be people here arguing that the British Army needed to build a very tall ladder to deal with the problem.

The ladder would be built by BAe, it would be ready by 2137 at a cost of £47 billion and would be fitted for but not with rungs.

I simply said that the FCO had held a recent conference on Somalia, we've arrested Khat traffickers and armed ship transiting through the region.

Seems like the PR ground work for some sort of operation there, in support of our vital interests and national security.

Not sure if I believe it, but people cleverer than me (and I admit that's nearly everyone) seem to think it a good idea.

if i'm honest my previous comment was said with a sort of tired resignation.

are our lords and masters now more likely to think military intervention is a good idea because right from the start they'll absolutely rule out ground troops (as we saw in Libya) and they perceive bombing/shelling/missile strikes as a relatively "safe" option?
