Marie Colvin's death, highlights the risks these genuine reporters are prepared to go to, in bringing us the news. It also puts to shame the antics of other reporters, who prefer to do their story gathering from the interweb rather than risk their lives in actual warzones. Particularly some of the lazy bleeders who haunt this site for information. They will probably claim to be the same type of journalist as she was?... They aren't, and they know it!!!! RIP

Foreign correspondent is still a dignified epiphet in my lexicon. And she went with her boots on.

Hear, hear. There seem to be some on here with a very odd idea of what war reporters do and why. People like Ms Colvin make sure that these events can't be ignored. Those who imply that because she went with a notebook rather than a rifle 'deserved' her fate reveal more of themselves than of her. When we go to these places, we do so with the full panoply of support around us and the warm fuzzy 'I don't really have to take responsibility for what happens to me' feeling. In fact, I doubt more than 40% of those who 'deploy' to AFG ever go outside the wire. Jounalists go on a shoestring, with little or no prospect of timely rescue when it goes wrong. Fear not - I'm as much for disembowling Piers Moron as the next man, but there are hacks and journalists. Colvin was the latter, and a damned impressive one. There's no contradiction in being proud of what we do and in admiring others who take dreadful risks to do some good.

Heard an interesting tribute to her on R4 earlier. Graduated from Yale, foreign correspondent for over 30 years, covering many minor conflicts that noone else could be bothered with. Lost an eye in Sri-Lanka from a grenade attack (thought she would lose both), and suffered from PTSD from that incident, took up open sea sailing to cope. She says she has received countless letters from Tamils in SL, offering to donate their eyes for her. Basically never afraid to report what she saw, and never reporting what she did not see - simple, honest journalism!

My thoughts? Arrse needs to have a word with itself - 30 years of service is longer than 99.99% of this site, literally. If she got medals for her work, she would have a full double row. Probably seen alot more than 99.99% of this site too, and yes that does include Afghan and Iraq. heavy/light/sporradic bombing?? And what you know of these things (apart from dishing it out)? In her words "15 rounds landed in 14 seconds, as I counted them, in one residential district"...

Anyway, she kind of reminds me of a Valkyrie. RIP.

    RIP - Marie Colvin

She was a gutsy lady who spent her live traveling to the hellholes of the globe and reporting back to those of us who sit at home in our armchairs. She was a fine and very hard working journalist. I have great respect for those who, unarmed, willingly work in the midst of armed conflict.

@ Iron DUke - Sir, I must express a difference of opinion with your characterization of Ms. Colvin as "a game old bird" She was only 54, younger than me and therefore by definition is young. OLD FFS! f'n sprogs!!!

    You probably still would.
I didn't say it was your fucking fault, I said I was blaming you.

A brave lady. I thought it was telling when Jon Snow said tonight that the news from Homs has dried up. Hope the UN come to their senses and sort the Syrian situation out now before more people are killed.
