I disagree. The RN has always maintained a presence in the South Atlantic since '82. This is a routine patrol for a Destroyer. The fact that it is a new shiny Destroyer makes no difference here. This trip has been on the cards since Dauntless was laid down.
On average a Type 42 would smash in a Falklands trip every 8 to 12 years during the course of it's life. Now the 45s are taking over their role, it's entirely natural for one to be going South for a bit. Chances are the ship that takes over Dauntless will be another 45 because that's what we have these days. The press are simply taking advantage of the current timing in order to make a big deal out of this.
Anyway, good luck to them, they are gonna be cold and bored for a few months, then they'll probably get a few days whoring in Brazil, Montevid or Valperaiso. One cannot begin to fathom the immensity of the fuck I do not give.

A very reasoned and sensible answer mate. It's also completely wasted on the throbber that thinks HMG base its decisions on whats written on this site.
Wasnt Air Filter predicting that Russia would kick off WWIII before Christmas? I bet his local supermarket sell out of tin Foil and ikeem pretty quick.....Money is the root of all evil.
But it does buy hookers and drugs.

To be fair, to go up against the Argies naval forces we could simply send a few divers tooled up with hand-crack drills and get them to do some drilling in the side of their ships. It worked over 200 years ago and I would imagine the current Argentinian navy is of about the same build quality.

Royal Navy to send HMS Dauntless to Falkland Islands - Telegraph
The Telegraph's been getting quite an impressive hard-on about it all. Apparently Dauntless can "take out all of South America's fighter aircraft let alone Argentina's..." With only 48 missiles? I don't think someone's done their sums properly. Unless Viper's a really canny bit of kit that bangs into the wings of multiple aircraft. Have the manufacturers been less than honest about it's true specification?
"it can shoot down Argentine fighters as soon as they leave their bases..." But presumably only if it's parked up within 60 miles of them.
Every day's a school day.
