All goes to show that the signing of a phone book size memo and old enemies standing chuckling in front of camera's will not satisfy the extremists on either side of the divide.
The haven't gone away you know!!!

After years of checking my car in Germany late 80's and 90's i still get down and check wheel arches and under the car at least a dozen times a month when left in car parks and outside the MQ...just an automatic response from me and something that we all was used to in BAOR. Civvies look at me a bit strange...maybe its because Im a lot older and they think Im having a heart attack.

I think the old 'don't kid yourself that they don't know you are a Brit and get down and check properly was pretty good at saving your legs.

What that wee lad from the the Short Strand that got put in the bin in the Village after getting a hiding from hell.? There Western it's posted.
I heard a different scenario of what led upto the attack, but they've tarnished the name of the Village with what they did on that wee lad."I am not an Ulsterman but yesterday, the 1st. July, as I followed their amazing attack, I felt that I would rather be an Ulsterman than anything else in the world."

I guess we concentrate on 'Afghan' being the main focus of attention, that we forget all about NI. Many young squaddies have not served on Ops there, so probably are a bit naive about the situation there.Although, I have no idea what the Armys policy is nowadays on briefing servicemen on visiting NI.
When I did security in the city, we used to get emails from City of London police, about PIRA threats and possible targets, although thankfully we have good security services who do alot of good work that we never know about. PIRA/ IRA never went away, they are very much alive today. Even in the UK, lets keep our guard up like we were taught whilst serving.
But lets not forget guys and girls, even during the height of the troubles, squaddies still did silly things and went to out of bounds places. Sometimes, to a great cost.Last edited by loggielad; 11-01-2012 at 16:33.
