Always thought it would be a better way of getting rid of a bunch of rioters " with a belt of 200 rounds, in your own time, go on."

Once upon a time it was perfectly fine and proper for an Officer and a Gentleman to read the riot act to a crowd, order said crowd to disperse within an alloted time and then order 5 rounds rapid and advance with fixed bayonet.

So much simpler and easy to understand......

no it wasn't, you needed a magistrate to read the riot Act. Then you could in your own time, go on.

Maybe had the order to open fire been given and many many more rioters/bombers/gunmen been killed and the Gov't had had the balls to ignore any negative world opinion, there wouldn't have been any more riots etc.

More bombers and gunmen...it seems according to the latest DS solution that NO gunmen or bombers were shot. The government wasn't really in the business of ignoring "negative world opinion" either, more of trying not to be the government which finally saw a full scale civil war erupt in NI wih massive civilian casualties...

    You beat me to it.

I would open fire if I was given a lawful command in line with the ROE enforced at the time. I would also fire under my own initiative if I felt it was required and again allowed under the ROE.

People can call me a dullard if they want but this isn't the NAAFI and I have no intention of becoming murdering scum.

Actually, after this incident, there weren't that many more riots.

    Strange that eh?

Peace can only ever be achieved, by the total & utter obliteration of either you, or your enemy.

Anyone that thinks it can be done by the ballot box is a dreamer!

    Utter fantasy.

As late as 1978 the local clowns would spend every summer's afternoon rioting in exactly the same places the shootings took place on Bloody Sunday. We expended the Bde reserve of plastic bullets there more than once that summer.

    What do you mean "already"?

They are not "at it already", they are "still at it", as the two communities have been for generations. But now it is once again at a level with which the Police in the province are capable of dealing, unaided by the Army, and civil war is not an imminent prospect.
