You've missed my point; what happened >18 years ago is of little relevance ( and I'm pretty sure NuLab where not so finger-pointy as Dave and Co. ) and they're moaning about the £37 Bn unfunded defence shortfall while forgetting to mention that they're saddling the MoD with a £20 Bn bill for Trident.
Labour inherited a good and improving economy when they got in, and still blamed the tories for every ill. Labour's first term was OK as they did not deviate much, if at all, from the tory financial policies. It only started going tits-up when Brown began spending like a squaddy in a brothel.
For example: huge National debt? Blame Pa Broon and Blair. ( nothing to do with the Banks nearly bringing about the collapse of UK plc. )
The latest comment just heard on R4 says that there is a £37Bn unfunded liability for the MoD over the next ten years; naturally, this is all Labours' fault and the cynics might say this is laying the ground for some swingeing cuts.
So, what are Dave and his chums doing to help the MoD get out of this position?
Telling them that they'll have to find £20 bn for Trident.
Weasels.
Have to say "No" I'm afraid.
Every chance that the Tories get to show the public just how much Liebour f***ed up the nation's finances is fine by me. You never know - it might actually get through to a few of the idiots who actually voted Labour in the last election.

Labour left a real headache of an economy when they left office (well dragged out screaming more like) and in fact, Labour are not denying it. They deserve all the slagging they get.
What I am getting a tad concerned about is how much the Torys have latched on to this and are using this to force through policies and cuts which normally they would not get through. "Cut everything now by up to 40%, have a tough couple of years and then start giving it back to the country in time for the next election to make us look like good guys" seems to be the way things are going.
There is a huge budget deficit, no denying but just how much is this the Tories just working to the principle of 'Let's see what we can get away with'.

I don't necessarily disagree with that statement. However, is that such a bad thing? Running the spring-cleaning broom through the whole house, binning all the shit and detritus of 11 years and lozzing it in the skip. It's possible to start again from a clean house, and keep it in order, more simply, knowing where everything is, where it goes and how much of it there is.
Edited to add: Just noted that the audit commission has got the heave-ho today. About fucking time too. Judging by the shite state of things today, just what the fuck were they auditing, and for who?
It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages.

We can but hope they see what they can get away with in terms of reducing the extra money our caledonian cousins get per head of population of taxpayers money.
Back to BB's OP, the answer is no, clearly they (labour) need a stomping on every occasion possible, and I am surprised that anyone remotely connected to the military would be in doubt of that.
(Yes I'm sure no politician of any colour is going to leave us untouched, and I am quite aware of the raping the defence budget is en route for, but Doctor Fox today detailing some of his planning assumptions sounded quite well reasoned.)
