Discuss Royal Navy, take note... at the Current Affairs, News and Analysis forum within the The Army Rumour Service website; http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/ar...te-rabble.html
What can you say.....harsh?, maybe.....but not way off the mark - not the Navys ...
What can you say.....harsh?, maybe.....but not way off the mark - not the Navys fault clearly, but Labour's Human Rights Act of 1997 and probably will be Harriet Habidons Equality Bill thats going through right now
As for the Thread: it was Danish SF who rescued the hostages. Not a bunch of sailors with only basic weapons training and no training at all in hostage rescue.
Even Royal Marines would have been of little use in that situation, as the black arts of hostage rescue are not part of the Commando Course.
Anyone here doubt that the Navy would like nothing better than to be allowed to use Somalia as one BFO firing range? Blame the politicians and international law for the p1ss-weak ROE, not the RN.

"No captain can do very wrong if he places his ship alongside that of the enemy" Horatio Nelson
In 1953 the UK Defence Budget was 11.3% of GDP. By 1966 it had been reduced to 6.6%. In 2012 it is hovering around 2%. Good job we're no longer expected to fight any wars, isn't it?

Which fits in where, exactly, with regard to a boat load of innocent civilians being used as human shields by drugged-up, trigger-happy thugs?
I take it you have not seen the photographs and video taken from the Wave Knight which is well armed with 2x Phalanx and 2 30mm BMARC guns
The question remains: what, exactly, was the Wave Knight supposed to do with all that firepower?
IIRC, they did'nt reach the boat until after it had been boarded by the Somalians, so it's not as if they could have gotten their retaliation in first and shot fcuk out of the Skinnies before they grabbed the hostages. And once the Skinnies got their hands on the couple, all of Wave Knights weapons were effectively useless.
Make no mistake, things don't always go the pirates' way. The warships on station have thwarted countless Somali pirate attacks with boarding paraphanalia and weapons either ditched or confiscated and pirates arrested if caught in the act. Like most good news involving RN and other warships it seems, such successes seldom make the headlines although some of them get reported:
